About Anglesey
The cottage came into view like a hug from an old mate – this cosy wooden cabin nestled in a quiet spot near Holyhead, with its pitched roof and those big windows promising views of the rolling fields and distant sea. I parked wonkily on the gravel (tyre sorted, phew), grabbed my keys from the lockbox, and stepped inside, shaking off the rain like a soggy labrador. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The open-plan living space hit me with that instant "ahh" feeling – a wood-burning stove already set with kindling, squishy sofas draped in woolly throws, and a kitchen that screamed "cook up a storm" with its Aga-esque cooker and quirky Welsh slate worktops. I could smell the faint pine from the beams, and there on the table was a welcome basket: fresh bread, local butter, and a bottle of Brains SA – proper thoughtful touch that made me grin. I dumped my bags and wandered straight to the French doors at the back, flinging them open to a private patio that backs onto nothing but greenery and the odd sheep bleating in the distance. The garden's wildish, with herbs poking up and a hammock swaying gently – perfect for lazy afternoons, though right now I just stood there, mug of tea in hand (kettle boiled in seconds, naturally), taking in the salty air. It's so peaceful here, just a stone's throw from Holyhead's buzz but feeling a world away. I spotted the hot tub bubbling away under a pergola – oh yes, that's calling my name later – and a cheeky robin hopped onto the fence, eyeing me up as if to say, "Make yourself at home, but don't eat all the crumbs." That first evening, as the sun dipped low over the Ireland ferry routes visible from the hill, I fired up the stove (matches at the ready, no faffing about) and rustled up some beans on toast, feet up on the coffee table strewn with board games and guidebooks to nearby spots like Trearddur Bay. The bedrooms? Up the cute loft ladder – mine had a superking bed piled high with fluffy duvets, and skylights perfect for stargazing without even stepping out. I lay there later, tyre drama forgotten, reflecting on how daft it is that we pack our lives so full back home. Here at Caban Cariad, arriving in a flap only made the calm hit harder – it's like the cottage knew I needed this reset. No grand adventures yet, just the simple joy of a cracking first night in, with the sea whispering promises for tomorrow. If you're after a proper Anglesey escape, this wee gem's got my heart already. Can't wait to wake up to it all over again. |
