About Anglesey
Pulling up to Anglesey Lodge in Menai Bridge just before teatime on a drizzly Friday, I was knackered but buzzing. The lodge is one of those picture-perfect Welsh cottages tucked into a quiet spot, all stone walls and slate roof, with the sea's salty whisper just a stone's throw away. I parked on the gravel drive—crunching satisfyingly under my tyres—and hauled my weekend bag out, already forgetting the sat-nav fiasco. The owner, a cheery local chap called Dafydd, met me at the door with a key and a "Croeso! Welcome, mind the step." That step nearly had me over, mind—my first impression nearly marred by a comedy tumble, but I recovered with a laugh and stepped inside. Oh, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. The lounge was cosy as anything, with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (which I lit later, naturally) and squashy sofas in muted blues that screamed "relax here till Monday." Big windows framed views of the garden sloping down towards the Menai Strait—boats bobbing, gulls wheeling, and that ever-present Anglesey light playing tricks on the water. I dumped my bag and made a beeline for the kitchen, a proper home-from-home setup with a Rayburn cooker that looked like it could whip up a full Welsh breakfast in seconds. Kettle on, builders' tea brewing, I poked around: the granite worktops were spotless, and there was a welcome basket with local bara brith and fresh milk. Proper thoughtful, that. Wandering upstairs, I found the bedrooms—mine with a super-king bed piled high with fluffy duvets, and an en-suite that was compact but gleaming, complete with fluffy towels and Molton Brown goodies. The views from the window? Magic. Snowdonia's outline hazy in the distance, but right there, the strait glittering like it was showing off. I flopped on the bed for a mo, staring at the beamed ceiling, and had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection: here I was, mid-30s city dweller, faffing about with sat-navs and suitcases, yet somehow I'd carved out this pocket of peace. Life's too short not to chase these little escapes, innit? No emails, no deadlines—just me, the sea, and whatever takeaways Menai Bridge could rustle up. That evening, as the sun dipped low (drizzle be damned), I cracked open a bottle of Welsh red from the offie down the road and sat on the patio with fish and chips from a chippy I'd spotted en route. The chaos of arrival melted away; this lodge felt like an old mate's place, welcoming and unpretentious. First impressions? Smashing. I was already plotting lazy walks along the strait tomorrow, maybe a potter to the pier for ice cream. Anglesey had me hooked from the off—mishaps and all. |
