About St Andrews
I finally made it to St Andrews after a bit of a faff on the road from Edinburgh. The sat-nav decided to have a mid-journey identity crisis, sending me down a winding single-track lane that felt more like a sheep's private driveway than a proper route. I ended up reversing into a hedge – nothing dramatic, just a few leaves in the grille and a sheep giving me the side-eye as if I'd gatecrashed its lunch. Laughed it off, of course, and ten minutes later, there it was: the 2 Bed Lodge, tucked away in a peaceful spot just on the edge of town, welcoming me like an old mate with a hug.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was smitten straight away. It's one of those proper cosy cabins – wooden cladding glowing in the soft Fife light, with a little veranda that screamed "park yourself here with a cuppa." I hauled my bag inside, and blimey, it was even better than the photos. The open-plan living area had a wood-burning stove (unlit for now, but promising evenings ahead), squishy sofas piled with cushions, and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics – kettle on, tea bags at the ready. Up the stairs, two snug bedrooms with crisp white duvets and views peeking out over the garden. No grand luxury, just that perfect, unpretentious Scottish charm that makes you want to kick off your shoes and exhale.

First impressions? Pure bliss for doing sod all, which was exactly the point of this three-day jaunt. I'd come to St Andrews to slow right down, and the lodge was made for it. After unpacking (which took five minutes), I flopped onto the sofa with a book I'd been meaning to crack open for months – some light Scottish history thing, forgotten the title already. The windows framed a lush garden, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, birds flitting about like they owned the place. I cracked the French doors and let the fresh air in, that clean, briny scent from the nearby coast wafting over. No rush, no plans – just me, a brew, and the joy of bugger all on the agenda.

As the sun dipped low that first evening, I wandered out to the garden properly. It's a proper suntrap, with a picnic bench under a big old tree, perfect for lingering. I rustled up a simple tea – beans on toast, nothing fancy – and ate it out there, watching the light fade over the rooftops of St Andrews. The town's right there, close enough to feel its vibe without the hustle. From the lodge, it's a gentle ten-minute stroll to the high street, past quaint stone cottages and the odd historic ruin that makes you feel like you've stepped into a postcard.

Next morning, day two dawned misty and magical. I resisted the urge to charge off to the Old Course (saving that myth-busting for never) and instead embraced the lodge life. Breakfast in bed – porridge microwaved in the little kitchen, spooned while propped against pillows, gazing at the garden waking up. Then, out to the veranda with coffee and my book again. Hours slipped by, turning pages, listening to the hum of bees and distant church bells. It's funny how doing nothing feels so indulgent; I caught myself grinning at the absurdity of paying good money to sit still.

By afternoon, a leisurely potter into town felt just right – no power-walking, mind. St Andrews high street is a dream for slow explorers: popped into a wee bookshop for a Fife guide (more reading fodder), grabbed scones from a bakery that smelled like heaven, and ambled past the cathedral ruins, crumbling gracefully against the sea. Back at the lodge by tea-time, I lit the stove for the crackle of it, brewed tea, and sank into the sofa. Gentle self-reflection hit then, staring into the flames: life's mad rush back home, deadlines and doom-scrolling – what a relief to remember how good it feels to just be. No epiphanies, just a quiet nod to slowing down.

That first full day set the tone for the rest – lazy lounging in the garden, reading till my eyes blurred, short wanders to the harbour to watch fishing boats bob, then back to the lodge's embrace. The 2 Bed Lodge isn't about bells and whistles; it's about that rare gift of time suspended, where doing very little feels like the most luxurious adventure. If you're after a St Andrews escape that recharges the soul without moving a muscle, this is your spot. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return.
