About St Andrews
The lodge itself? Absolute cracker from the off. Tucked away in a peaceful spot overlooking the rolling Fife countryside, it's this cosy wooden haven that screams "get away from it all" without being miles from the action. I arrived mid-afternoon on day one, lugging my weekend bag through a light mist that was threatening to turn biblical. First impressions hit like a warm hug: the place is compact but spot-on, with two snug bedrooms, a kitchen that had all the mod cons, and a lounge with big windows framing the golf courses in the distance. No pretentious nonsense – just proper home comforts for a solo wanderer like me. I'd planned a three-day jaunt focused on walks, lacing up my boots to tackle St Andrews' coastal paths and inland trails. British weather, though? That cheeky sod had other ideas. Day one started promising: blue skies peeking through as I set off from the lodge on foot, a mere 10-minute stroll into town. I headed straight for the West Sands beach, that famous stretch from Chariots of Fire, pounding the firm sand with the North Sea breeze whipping my cheeks. It was pure magic – waves crashing, gulls squawking, and not a soul in sight bar a few hardy dog-walkers. Felt like I'd stepped into a postcard. But by lunchtime, the heavens opened. Proper Fife deluge, turning my jaunty beach hike into a squelching retreat. I dashed back towards the lodge, hood up, laughing at myself as puddles formed instant lakes on the path. Sheltering under a gnarled tree near the Old Course, I watched golfers in their waterproofs soldier on like it was nothing. Me? I pivoted to a shorter loop around the town centre – past the ancient ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, skeletal against the grey sky, and down cobbled lanes lined with quirky indie shops. The rain eased just enough for a mooch along the harbour, where fishing boats bobbed like they'd seen it all before. Day two dawned with that classic Scottish optimism: a glimpse of sun lured me out for the Lade Braes walk, a gentle riverside path starting practically from the lodge's doorstep. It's this lush, tree-lined trail following the Kinnessburn, perfect for spotting herons and forgetting your woes. I was midway, dreaming of fish suppers, when the wind picked up and rain lashed sideways again. Plans for a longer trek to the East Neuk cliffs? Scrubbed. Instead, I hunkered down for an impromptu lodge picnic – cheese toasties and a flask refill (lesson learned: screw-top this time) – gazing out at the downpour battering the windows. Cosy as you like, with the sound of rain on the roof turning it into a symphony. By day three, the weather was playing nice(ish), gifting a crisp morning for one last hike: the clifftop path from St Andrews to Guardbridge. Windswept views over the estuary, wildflowers nodding in the gusts, and that fresh sea air filling my lungs. A sudden shower mid-stride had me giggling – trousers plastered, boots caked in mud – but it was the perfect capper. British weather's like that unreliable mate who bails then turns up with gifts; it forced me to savour the small stuff, the serendipitous detours. Reflecting on it now, as I packed up that final afternoon, I realised these soggy adventures were the real highlight. No grand epics, just me, my boots, and the unpredictable Fife outdoors. The 2 Bed Lodge was the ideal base – close enough for spontaneous walks, secluded enough to recharge. If you're after a wee escape that reminds you life's too short for fair-weather plans, this is your spot. Already plotting a return when the forecast's... well, who needs forecasts? |
