About St Andrews
I finally made it to St Andrews after a bit of a faff on the road from Edinburgh – nothing major, just me spilling half my flask of tea all over the passenger seat as I navigated those narrow Fife lanes. Sod's law, innit? There I was, humming along to some cracking indie tunes, picturing my cosy three-day escape in this 1 Bed Lodge, and suddenly I'm mopping up PG Tips with a service station napkin while swearing at the SatNav for its cheeky "recalculating" chirps. By the time I pulled up outside the lodge on the edge of town, I was a right state – damp jeans, a soggy mapbook, and a grin that said "welcome to holiday chaos".

The lodge itself? Blimey, what a belter of a first impression. Tucked away in a quiet spot just a short stroll from the high street, it's one of those proper Scottish hideaways – a wee wooden lodge with a pitched roof, flower boxes bursting with pansies, and a gravel path that crunched under my wellies like it was rolling out the red carpet. I fumbled the key safe code (post-tea-spill brain fog, obviously), but once inside, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space is compact but ever so inviting, with a plush sofa piled high with tartan cushions facing a wood-burning stove that begged to be lit later. Sunlight streamed through the big windows onto a pine dining table set for two – perfect for my solo feast of fish suppers from the chippie down the road.

I dumped my bags and proper took it in. The kitchenette was a dream for lazy self-catering: shiny hob, a retro toaster that looked like it'd seen a few ceilidhs, and a fridge stocked with fresh milk courtesy of the hosts (cheers for that, Snaptrip). Up the ladder-like stairs to the bedroom – and cor, that bed! King-sized, swathed in crisp white linens and fluffy duck down, with views over the garden where birds were already having a right old chinwag. I flopped onto it for a nanosecond, giggling at myself for acting like a kid in a sweetie shop. The en-suite shower was tiny but mighty, promising hot blasts to wash away the road grime.

Stepping back out, the private patio sealed the deal. A couple of wooden chairs, a bistro table, and that fresh sea-tanged air wafting in from the nearby East Sands beach – just a ten-minute wander away. I could hear the distant cry of gulls and the faint hum of golfers on one of those world-famous links courses. No wonder St Andrews feels like stepping into a postcard; even my mishap-riddled arrival couldn't dim it.

Wandering into town proper that first afternoon, tea stains be damned, I nipped into Janetta's for a legendary sticky bun – gooey, cinnamon-swirled heaven that stuck to my fingers worse than the flask spill. The cobbled streets were buzzing with students from the uni, wrapped in hoodies against the brisk breeze, and locals nodding hellos like I'd been here for years. Popped into the Cathedral ruins next, those ancient stones glowing in the golden light, and felt a proper pang of reflection. Here I was, mid-forties, single, and splurging on a whim – not the young backpacker anymore, but chasing that same spark of adventure. The lodge was my perfect bolthole, a reminder that it's never too late for simple joys like this.

Back by dusk, I cracked open a tin of Caledonia Best from the local Co-op, fired up the stove (no disasters there), and settled in with a book. That first day – mishap and all – set the tone: St Andrews works its magic quick, and this 1 Bed Lodge is the ideal spot to let it. Can't wait for day two.
