About Scottish Borders
By the time we trundled down the narrow lane to Heron Lodge, the Borders' rolling hills were bathed in that soft, misty light that makes you think Scotland's showing off just for you. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Lauder—think lush green fields, ancient drystane walls, and not a soul in sight—the lodge popped into view like a cosy hug waiting to happen. It's this charming wooden-clad haven, all low-pitched roof and welcoming windows, sat right by a babbling burn that the kids immediately christened "the splashy river." We parked up, unloaded the chaos of bags, snacks, and a rogue football, and I fumbled with the key code like a proper numpty before the door swung open. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a favourite jumper—warm, lived-in, and just right for a family unwind. The open-plan living area is the heart of it: a wood-burning stove begging for a crackling fire (we got that going pronto), squishy sofas piled with tartan blankets, and a telly for rainy-day movies. The kitchen's a dream for lazy cooks like me—fully kitted with everything from cafetière to casserole dishes, plus a big farmhouse table where we dumped our picnic remnants and cracked open the fizz. I love how it's got that lodge vibe without being fussy; no pretentious ornaments, just practical charm that screams "kick off your wellies and stay a while." The kids, bless 'em, beelined for the bedrooms upstairs—two doubles and a twin, all snug with fluffy duvets and views over the garden. Our eldest claimed the one with the en-suite, declaring it "posh hotel style," while the little ones bounced on beds until I hollered for mercy. Outside, the real magic hit: a private hot tub bubbling away under a pergola (we didn't test it till later, but oh, the promise), a grassy patch perfect for footie, and that burn right there for paddling. We spent the first half-hour just pottering—the littlest dipping toes in the icy water, squealing with delight, me snapping pics while the hubster unpacked. A magpie eyed us cheekily from the fence, as if to say, "Welcome to my turf." As the sun dipped low, casting golden streaks across the hills, we fired up the BBQ (gas, thank heavens—no faffing with charcoal) and rustled up sausages and baps from the Lauder Co-op run we'd plotted. Sat there munching, steam rising from plates, the kids smeared in ketchup, I had one of those quiet moments. You know, the sort where you catch yourself thinking, "Blimey, this is it—the simple stuff that recharges the batteries." Work stress, school runs, the daily grind—it all melted away with the Borders breeze. Sure, there'd been the ice cream fiasco, and the inevitable "Dad, where's my charger?" pandemonium, but that's lodge life: a bit of joyful chaos wrapped in peace. Heron Lodge nailed that relaxed family break vibe from the off. If you're after hills, heart, and hassle-free bliss, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back. |
