About Perthshire
We arrived mid-afternoon on day one, trundling down that winding lane off the B846, the lodge peeking out like a cosy hug from the hills. First impressions? Blimey, what a stunner. Perched with those wraparound views over the Tay Valley, it’s got this rustic charm – stone walls, a cheeky hot tub bubbling away on the deck, and windows framing the sort of scenery that makes you go, “Why do I live in a city?” We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and stepped out to breathe in that crisp Perthshire air. Little did we know, the real adventure was about to unfold, courtesy of the Great British Weather. Keen to stretch the legs after the drive, we laced up our boots for a wander along the Birks of Aberfeldy, just a stone’s throw from the lodge. It’s that classic Highland walk – tumbling waterfalls, ancient oaks dripping with moss, and the River Tay murmuring below. The sun was peeking out, birds chirping like they’d had a lie-in, so we fancied ourselves proper explorers. I even packed a cheeky picnic of Scotch eggs and Irn-Bru. But oh, Scotland, you trickster – halfway up the path, the sky turned from blue to battleship grey in minutes. Fat raindrops started, then hail the size of marbles. We legged it back, laughing like loons, soaked to the skin. “Typical!” I yelled over the gale. Back at Osprey View, the hot tub was calling – steaming away while the storm raged outside. Slipping in there felt like cheating the weather gods, bubbles popping around us as we watched the clouds roll over the valley. Pure bliss. Day two dawned with a cheeky mist clinging to the hills, but we weren’t deterred. A gentle yomp from the lodge towards the Dewar’s Aberfeldy distillery trails – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for tattie scones later. The paths were lush, ferns brushing our knees, and the odd red squirrel darting about like it owned the place. I paused for a moment of quiet reflection there, leaning on a gate with the mist swirling: life’s too short for desk jobs when places like this exist, eh? Makes you ponder what really matters – a decent hike and a dram at day’s end. But wouldn’t you know it, the wind whipped up, turning our stroll into a squelchy dash. Plans for a longer loop to the Wade’s Bridge ruins? Scrapped. Instead, we holed up in the lodge’s snug lounge, fire crackling, plotting tomorrow over cups of builder’s tea. By day three, the weather was playing nice – patchy sun, enough to tempt us out for a final saunter along the riverbank paths near the lodge. We stuck close, savouring the views of those rolling Perthshire hills, the Tay sparkling below. No grand epics, just that satisfying ache in the calves and a sense of having outfoxed the forecasts. Osprey View Lodge nailed it as a base – comfy, secluded, with the hot tub earning hero status after every drenching. If you’re after a Perthshire getaway where hikes meet hilarious downpours, this is your spot. Me? I’m already plotting the return – tea flask secured this time. |
