About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Dundarach – our little family getaway in the heart of Perthshire. We’d piled into the car in Edinburgh that misty Friday morning, kids buzzing with excitement about “the cabin in the woods,” as they’d dubbed it. Me, I was just relieved to escape the city grind for three days of proper Highland air. The A9 was its usual self, winding through those epic Perthshire glens, with Ben Lawers looming like a grumpy giant on the horizon. About 20 minutes from Aberfeldy, though, disaster struck – or what passes for it on a family road trip. I’d packed the cool bag with picnic treats, but in my haste, forgot to zip it properly. Cue a rogue bottle of Irn-Bru tumbling out at a roundabout, exploding in a fizzy orange fountain all over the boot. The kids howled with laughter, my wife shot me that “told you so” look, and I spent the next five miles mopping up with soggy wipes. Classic dad fail, but hey, it set the tone: relaxed chaos, just how we like our holidays.

By early afternoon, we rolled up to Dundarach, tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Aberfeldy. The property’s a proper gem – a cosy wooden lodge that screams “get away from it all” without being pretentious. As we crunched over the gravel drive, the kids bolted out, whooping at the sight of the private hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it was waiting just for us. “Can we jump in now, Dad?” pleaded little Finn, all wide eyes and wellies. I laughed – “Not till we’ve unpacked, you wee monkeys!” – but inside, I was already melting into the vibe. Perthshire does that to you; one minute you’re dodging traffic, the next you’re breathing in pine-scented air that feels like a reset button.

Stepping inside was pure magic. The open-plan living area hit us with a wall of warmth from the wood-burning stove (thankfully stocked with logs), and the leather sofas looked begging for a family pile-in. We dumped the bags and raided the well-equipped kitchen – fresh bread from Aberfeldy’s bakery in the fridge, a welcome pack with local shortbread and Perthshire honey. The kids claimed the two twin rooms upstairs, giggling over the bunk beds, while we bagged the master with its en-suite and views straight out to the birch woods. First impressions? Spot on for lodge life. It’s got that rustic charm – exposed beams, tartan throws – but with mod cons like a massive telly and fast Wi-Fi for the odd Netflix cheat (guilty as charged).

We didn’t waste time. Hot tub first, naturally. Slipping into the steaming water as the sun dipped behind the hills, steam rising like fairy smoke, was bliss. The kids splashed about, turning it into a pirate ship battle, while we sipped tea and watched buzzards circle overhead. Later, we wandered the short path to the nearby riverbank – the Tay’s not far, and that gentle burble is the soundtrack of Perthshire heaven. Chaos ensued when Sophie slipped on the pebbly shore, landing bum-first in a puddle. “Mud bath spa treatment!” she declared, undeterred. I couldn’t help chuckling – these are the moments that stick.

As evening drew in, we fired up the stove, rustled up pasta with that local honey drizzle (genius combo), and played board games till yawns took over. Sitting there, flames crackling, kids finally conked out, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush had paused; no emails, no deadlines, just us and this perfect nook. Dundarach isn’t flashy – it’s better: real, unhurried joy. First impressions sealed it – we’re already plotting a return. If you fancy simple pleasures with a side of family mayhem, this Perthshire hideaway’s your spot.
