About Perthshire
I finally made it to that cosy 2 Bed Lodge in Killin after a drive that started promisingly but turned into a proper faff. Picture this: it's a crisp autumn morning in Perthshire, the sort where the mist clings to the hills like a reluctant duvet, and I'm humming along the A827 from Callander, windows down, feeling like I've cracked the code to a perfect three-day getaway. The lodge is one of those classic stone-built numbers right on the edge of Killin village, overlooking the Falls of Dochart – you know, that thundering cascade where the River Dochart crashes over rocks like it's auditioning for a Highland waterfall blockbuster. I'd booked it on a whim through Snaptrip, craving that proper Scottish bolt-hole vibe: two bedrooms, a wood-burning stove, and enough space for me to sprawl out solo without feeling lost.

But oh, the arrival. I was knackered from a week of city grind in Glasgow, so I'd loaded up the boot with enough supplies to siege a castle – fresh bread from the local bakery in Killin I'd grabbed en route, a slab of smoked salmon, and a cheeky bottle of Isle of Arran whisky for emergencies. Turned out the emergency was me. About two miles out from the lodge, as I navigated those narrow, twisty lanes flanked by sheep who looked at me like I was intruding on their spa day, disaster struck. A rogue pheasant – yes, a blooming pheasant – decided to play chicken (ironic, that) and darted right across the road. I swerved like a pro rally driver, heart in my mouth, only to clip the kerb and blow out the front left tyre. Flat as a pancake. No signal on my phone half the time in these parts, naturally, so there I was, parked on a verge with Loch Tay glinting mockingly in the distance, swearing under my breath while a passing farmer in a battered Land Rover gave me the side-eye and a cheery wave.

An hour later – thank God for the AA app and a breakdown bloke who arrived smelling faintly of peat smoke – I limped into the lodge's gravel drive on the spare doughnut tyre, later than planned and feeling like a right numpty. The mishap had me questioning my life choices: why didn't I just fly to Benidorm? But as I fumbled with the key code under the porch light (it was getting dusky already, Perthshire does that dramatic early twilight), the door swung open to paradise. Inside, it was pure hygge meets Highland charm. The open-plan living area hit me first: low-beamed ceiling, that wood-burner begging for logs, and a squishy leather sofa facing floor-to-ceiling windows with a view straight onto the falls. You could hear the constant roar of the water, like white noise from the gods. The kitchen was kitted out properly – Belfast sink, Aga-style cooker, and a larder stocked with tea towels that screamed "welcome, weary traveller."

I dumped my bags and wandered the two bedrooms upstairs, both snug as a bug with those crisp white linens and tartan throws. The master had an en-suite with a rain shower that promised redemption after my road rage, and the twin room overlooked the garden where dew was already settling on the heather. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Despite the tyre trauma, it felt like the lodge was wrapping me in a warm embrace. I cracked open that whisky, toasted the pheasant (may it live long and prosper), and just sat there as the sun dipped behind Ben Lawers, painting the sky in bruised purples. In that moment of gentle reflection, staring at the falls churning away relentlessly, I realised this was exactly what I needed – a chaotic arrival underscoring how the best spots make you forget the faff in seconds. Perthshire's magic, innit? Three days ahead, but honestly, this first evening had already won me over.
