I’ll never forget the drive to Oban for our three-day jaunt to Skye – that cheeky little cottage perched on the hillside overlooking the town. We’d piled into the car from Glasgow early doors, kids buzzing with excitement about rock pooling and fish suppers, me behind the wheel with a thermos of tea and a playlist of dodgy 90s indie. About halfway, just past the twisty bits around Loch Awe, disaster struck: I’d forgotten to pack the kids’ wellies. Cue a frantic five-minute rummage in the boot while the rain started spitting, and my youngest, Finn, wailing that his trainers would be “ruined forever.” Classic dad fail – we ended up stopping at a wee petrol station in Tyndrum for emergency plastic ones that squelched like rubber ducks the rest of the way. Lightened the mood, though; even got a thumbs-up from the cashier who’d clearly seen it all.

By the time we trundled into Oban around teatime, the town was doing its magic – that postcard view of McCaig’s Tower glowing in the fading light, ferries chugging out to Mull, and the sea air hitting you like a salty hug. Skye’s just a short hop up the hill from the high street, tucked into a quiet spot with views that make your jaw drop. Pulling up, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in. The cottage is one of those snug stone numbers, all cosy and compact, with a gravel drive that crunched under the tyres. We unloaded in a flurry – bags tumbling, kids racing ahead – and there it was: the front door key under the mat (old-school trust, love it), swinging open to reveal a lived-in lounge with a wood burner begging for a fire, and a kitchen that screamed “whip up some pasta and crack a tinny.”

First impressions? Pure lodge life bliss with a side of chaos. The living room windows framed Oban bay perfectly – you could watch the boats bobbing while sinking into the squishy sofa. I fired up the stove (matches at the ready, no faffing), and within minutes the place smelled of pine and promise. Kids claimed the bunk beds upstairs – two cosy doubles and that fun set-up for the little ones – while we bagged the master with its en-suite loo. Simple pleasures, innit? No fancy spa or pool (though there’s a shared hot tub out back we eyed for later), just solid comforts: fluffy towels, a telly for rainy evenings, and a dining table big enough for board games and post-supper sprawl.

We didn’t waste time settling – a quick change into those squeaky wellies, and we wandered down to the harbour, no more than a ten-minute stroll. Oban’s got that effortless vibe: fishing boats unloading the day’s catch, seagulls squawking for chips, and the water lapping at the pier. Grabbed fish and chips from a greasy spoon – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works – and ate them on a bench, vinegar wind whipping our faces. Finn declared it “the best supper ever,” oblivious to the seagull that nicked a chip mid-air. Back at Skye, we cracked open a bottle of Irn-Bru (kids) and a dram (us), toasting the view as the sun dipped behind the hills. Chaos ensued when the toddler smeared ketchup on the rug, but a quick wipe and a giggle sorted it – that’s family break territory.

Sitting there that first night, flames crackling, bay twinkling below, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s been a whirlwind lately – work piling up, routines grinding me down – but here, in this unpretentious nook, it all paused. No grand plans, just us, the sea, and a bit of lodge-life mayhem.
