About Oban
I finally made it to Oban after a right faff of a drive up from Glasgow, the A85 twisting like a hungover snake through the misty hills. It was meant to be a straightforward three-hour jaunt, but no, I managed to take a wrong turn near Benderloch, ending up on some narrow single-track lane where my little hatchback had a proper standoff with a sheepish farmer in a Land Rover. We both reversed for what felt like miles—him with a cheery wave, me swearing under my breath—before I extricated myself, red-faced and ten minutes late for check-in at Muck. Classic me, turning a scenic drive into a comedy of errors.

Pulling up to the cottage just as the late afternoon light was turning that gorgeous Oban gold, I was knackered but buzzing. Muck sits tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of town, surrounded by those rolling green fields that scream West Coast Scotland. It's one of those proper stone-built jobbies, the kind that looks like it's been there since the Jacobites were causing bother, with a cheeky modern twist inside. I fumbled the keys from the lockbox—still chuckling at my sheep escapade—and stepped over the threshold, instantly hit by this wave of "ahh, this is it" cosiness.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The open-plan living space is a dream: a wood-burning stove begging to be lit (though I held off till evening), squishy sofas draped in tartan throws, and a kitchen kitted out with everything you'd need to rustle up a fry-up or a decent pasta. I dumped my bags and beelined for the window—cracking views over the bay, with the sea loch glittering like it was showing off just for me. Oban's harbour was in plain sight, the wee fishing boats bobbing about, and I could make out the McCaig's Tower folly up on the hill, that mini-Coliseum silhouette against the sky. Proper postcard stuff, but real.

Wandering upstairs, the bedrooms didn't disappoint. Mine had a massive bed piled high with fluffy pillows—after that drive, I was tempted to dive straight in. The en-suite was spotless, with a rainfall shower that promised redemption for my travel-weary self. Light streamed in from a skylight, making the whole place feel airy and alive, not at all musty like some holiday lets I've endured. I paused for a proper mooch around, spotting thoughtful touches like board games stacked by the telly and fresh towels folded just so. It felt like the kind of place where worries melt away, no pretensions, just solid Highland welcome.

Stepping back outside for a breather, the garden wrapped around the cottage like a hug—patio area with benches for al fresco cups of tea, and those views again, stretching to the water where seals might pop up for a nosey. I nipped down to the nearby path for a quick leg-stretch, the air crisp with that salty tang, gulls wheeling overhead. Oban's vibe hit me full force: a bustling harbour town that's somehow still chill, with the distillery's smokery wafting faintly on the breeze. Back at Muck, I cracked open a tin from the fridge (welcome pack sorted, cheers Snaptrip), and sat there toasting my daft arrival. What a mishap to kick things off, but honestly, it made the payoff sweeter.

Reflecting on it now, as the sun dipped and I fired up that stove, I realised this wee chaos was a reminder to slow down. Life's too short for perfect journeys—it's the messy bits that make the good arrivals shine. Muck nailed it on first glance: comfy, scenic, and just the tonic for a solo three-day reset. Can't wait to see what days two and three bring, but right now, I'm sorted.
