About Loch Ness
Pulling up to Pod 2 felt like stumbling into a hug. Tucked in a quiet spot just outside Drumnadrochit, this wee timber pod is the epitome of cosy – all warm wood cladding, a pitched roof with skylights, and a veranda that screams "put your feet up." It's one of those places that's small but perfectly formed, with a double bed piled high with quilts, a compact kitchenette stocked with tea, coffee, and even fresh milk in the fridge (cheers, hosts). The garden? Oh, it's a dream – wildish and private, with a picnic bench overlooking a babbling burn and those rolling fields that stretch towards the loch. No grand views of Nessie herself from here, but you catch glimpses through the trees, just enough to spark the imagination without the coachloads of tourists. First impressions? Pure bliss for a lazy bones like me. I arrived mid-afternoon, dumped my bags, and immediately cracked open a book on the veranda with a mug of builder's tea. The air was crisp, laced with pine and that earthy dampness you only get in the Highlands. Birds chattered overhead, and the only urgency was deciding whether to read another chapter or have a biscuit first. I opted for both, sprawled out like a contented cat. It's funny – back home in London, I'm always rushing, phone buzzing, deadlines nipping at my heels. Here, time stretched out lazy as a Sunday lie-in. No itinerary, no alarms. Just the joy of doing bugger all. That first evening, I pottered about the garden, barefoot on the grass, picking a few late blackberries from the bushes lining the path. Sweet as sin, they were – perfect for a crumble I half-heartedly thought about making but never did. Instead, I fired up the pod's little barbecue (gas, dead easy) and grilled some local sausages from the Drumnadrochit shop I'd nipped into on arrival. The sun dipped low, painting the sky pink over the hills, and I ate straight off the foil, watching bats flit about. No Netflix, no scrolling – just the crackle of flames and the distant call of a buzzard. Blissful. The next morning – still smack in those first impressions – I woke to rain pattering on the skylight, the kind that makes you burrow deeper under the duvet. Perfect excuse for more reading: I polished off half a battered copy of Highland folklore I'd brought, chuckling at tales of water kelpies and the odd Nessie sighting. Midday cleared up, so I ambled down the garden path to the burn, dipped my toes in the peaty water, and lay on a blanket with a flask of coffee. It's daft, but that simple act felt revolutionary. No hikes up Ben Nevis or speedboat tours – just me, slowing right down, letting the world hum along without me. By day three's dawn, I was hooked on this unhurried rhythm. A gentle wander to the nearby village for scones and tattie scones from the bakery – still within spitting distance – then back to the pod for napping in the hammock strung between the trees. Self-reflection hit me there, swinging lazily: life's too short for constant hustle. Pod 2 taught me that in 48 hours flat. If you're after proper rest, the kind that mends your soul, this is it. No grand adventures needed – just the sheer joy of sweet nothing by Loch Ness. I'll be back. |
