About Loch Lomond
I finally made it to Montrose Lodge after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from Glasgow, which is only a cheeky 30-minute drive but turned into an hour thanks to my daft sat-nav glitch. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A811 in our battered old estate car, kids in the back bickering over who gets the last Haribo, when the bloody thing decides to reroute us down a single-track lane towards some farm that looked like it hadn't seen a visitor since the Jacobites. We ended up nose-to-nose with a sheepish farmer in a tractor, both of us reversing like it was a comedy sketch. "Welcome to Scotland," I muttered, as we extricated ourselves with waves and apologies. Classic family holiday start – minor chaos, maximum laughter.

Pulling up to Montrose Lodge just outside Drymen, though, all that faded like morning mist over Loch Lomond. Tucked into a peaceful spot with views that make your heart skip – we're talking rolling hills, ancient oaks, and that glassy loch shimmering in the distance – this lodge is the epitome of cosy Scottish hideaway. It's one of those places that screams "relaxed family break," with its stone-built charm, wooden beams, and a garden that begs for barefoot wandering. We arrived mid-afternoon, suitcases tumbling out as the kids bolted straight for the swing set out back, squealing with delight. I stood there, key in hand, taking it in: the lodge sleeps eight comfortably, with four bedrooms done up in that homely tartan-and-plaid style that feels authentically Highland without being naff.

First impressions? Pure bliss wrapped in a bit of lodge-life mayhem. We dumped our bags in the spacious open-plan living area – think wood-burning stove (already stocked with logs, bless the hosts), squishy sofas perfect for piling onto, and a kitchen that's a dream for whipping up simple suppers. I cracked open a tin of beans for beans-on-toast (posh holiday fare), while my other half unpacked the cool box. The kids, meanwhile, discovered the board games stash and turned the dining table into a riotous Monopoly empire before we'd even hung our coats. "Mum, this place is magic!" my youngest declared, already plotting a den under the stairs.

Stepping outside was the real kicker. The garden slopes gently towards woodland paths that lead you right into the kind of scenery that inspired a thousand postcards. We wandered just a few minutes down to the lochside – no cars needed, it's that close – and dipped our toes in the peaty water, giggling as the cold bit. Ducks quacked hellos, and in the distance, the hump of Conic Hill tempted us for tomorrow, but for now, it was all about settling in. Back at the lodge, we lit the stove as the sun dipped, casting that golden Highland glow through the windows. Chaos ensued when the youngest tried "helping" with kindling and nearly set his sleeve alight – "Fireman Sam to the rescue!" we chorused, dousing it with a tea towel. Light-hearted lodge pandemonium at its finest.

As the evening unwound, sat there with a cuppa, watching the kids conk out on the sofa mid-film, I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, in this unpretentious wee lodge, it's the simple pleasures that hit home: the crackle of the fire, the shared mishaps, the way the loch whispers "slow down." Montrose Lodge isn't flashy – no need, with the Trossachs on your doorstep – but it's got that welcoming soul that turns a three-day jaunt into something restorative. First impressions? Hooked already, and we hadn't even unpacked the wellies properly. Can't wait for day two's gentle explorations.
