About Loch Lomond
I’ll never forget the drive up to Luxury Lodge 3 Bed Hot Tub near Loch Lomond last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the leaves were turning all shades of fiery gold and the air had that proper Scottish nip to it. Me and the missus piled into the car from Glasgow, about an hour’s pootle along the A82, with the radio blasting some cheesy folk tunes to get us in the mood. The journey was stunning, the hillsides ablaze with russet and amber, but wouldn’t you know it, five minutes from the turn-off, I managed to spill my flask of tea all over the passenger seat. “Classic me,” I laughed, mopping it up with a service station napkin while she rolled her eyes. A daft little mishap, but it set the tone for a weekend of cosy mishaps wrapped in seasonal magic.

Pulling up to the lodge just outside Cairndow, I was gobsmacked by the first impressions. Nestled in a wooded spot overlooking the loch, it’s the epitome of autumnal luxury – think dark timber cladding blending into the coppery foliage, with woodsmoke curling from a neighbour’s chimney. The season had painted everything in these rich, glowing hues; the loch itself shimmered like molten silver under a watery sun, and the surrounding Argyll hills were carpeted in bracken that crackled underfoot. We arrived mid-afternoon, the light already fading into that golden hour glow that makes Scotland feel like a painting come to life. No harsh summer crowds here – just the whisper of wind through the turning leaves and the occasional call of a buzzard wheeling overhead.

Stepping inside, the warmth hit us like a hug. The open-plan living area was all plush sofas, a crackling log burner (already stocked with kindling, bless them), and massive windows framing the loch’s moody vista. Autumn’s chill made that heat all the more welcome – we kicked off our boots and brewed a pot of tea straight away, watching mist roll in from the water like a soft blanket. The three bedrooms were snug as a bug, with fluffy duvets begging for an early night, and the kitchen gleamed with everything you’d need for a hearty stew. But the star? That private hot tub on the deck, steaming invitingly against the cooling air. We couldn’t resist firing it up right away, slipping in as the sun dipped behind Ben Lomond, turning the sky into a blaze of pink and orange. The water bubbled around us, chasing away the day’s drive, while leaves fluttered down like confetti. “This is living,” I sighed, bubbles tickling my chin.

First impressions extended to the immediate surroundings too, all shaped by the season’s embrace. A short wander down to the loch’s edge – no more than a ten-minute stroll – revealed pebbly shores littered with fallen acorns and the gentle lap of water chilled by autumn rains. We spotted a few seals bobbing about, their sleek heads popping up curiously, and the air smelled of damp earth and pine. No midges to ruin it, thank goodness; October’s frost had seen them off. Back at the lodge, we rustled up fish and chips from the nearby Cairndow’s pier (a real gem, that wee spot), scoffing them by the fire as dusk fell early, the windows fogging up with condensation. It was pure bliss, the kind of evening where time slows down.

That first evening prompted a bit of gentle reflection over a dram of whisky. Staring out at the loch’s inky blackness, I thought about how autumn strips things back – no frantic summer hikes, just this quiet luxury of being still. Work stress from back home felt a world away; here, wrapped in the season’s mellow embrace, I realised I’d been rushing life too much. The lodge wasn’t just a holiday let; it was a timely reminder to savour the slow burn of fall. By bedtime, with rain pattering softly on the roof, I was already plotting a return – next year, same season, same spot. What a cracking first impression.
