About Loch Lomond
The satnav led us down a narrow, tree-lined lane off the main road, past glassy bits of Loch Fyne peeking through the foliage. About 20 minutes from the bigger waters of Loch Lomond proper, this spot felt like our own hidden gem. As we rounded the final bend, there it was: the lodge, nestled in a peaceful wooded clearing with views straight out to the loch’s shimmering edge. It’s one of those classic timber lodges – sturdy, cosy, with a sloped roof and a wee veranda that screamed “kick back here with a cuppa.” Pet-friendly too, which was a godsend for our daft Labrador, Rufus, who’d been whining the whole way. We piled out, stretching our legs, and the first breath of that crisp Highland air hit us like a welcome hug. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the distant lap of water. Unlocking the door (keys tucked under a flowerpot, as promised), we stepped into a homely haven. The open-plan living area was all warm wood panelling and squishy sofas, with a wood-burning stove begging to be lit later. Kitchen was kitted out nicely – oven, hob, even a dishwasher for the post-dinner slump. Three bedrooms upstairs: master with a king-sized bed and en-suite, perfect for us, then twins for the kids, all with those lovely loch views through the windows. Rufus claimed his spot by the patio doors immediately, tail thumping like a drum. First impressions? Spot on for lodge life chaos in the best way. We dumped the bags and headed straight out to explore on foot – no grand plans, just ambling down the short path to the lochside, maybe a mile from the lodge. The kids splashed in the shallows, skipping stones while I attempted (and failed spectacularly) to skim one further than ten feet. “You’re rubbish, Dad!” my youngest giggled, which had us all in stitches. Rufus bounded after sticks, emerging covered in mud, turning him into a walking bog monster. Back at the lodge by late afternoon, we fired up the barbecue on the deck – nothing fancy, just sausages and buns from the nearby Cairndow shop – watching the sun dip behind the hills, painting the water gold. As evening settled, I had a quiet moment on the veranda, mug in hand, Rufus snoring at my feet. Staring out at the loch’s calm ripples, I reflected on how these little escapes recharge you. Work stress? Forgotten. Family squabbles from the car? Dissolved. It’s the simplicity – the lodge’s snug embrace, the easy access to nature’s playground – that makes Loch Lomond magic. No need for big hikes or crowds; this was our bubble of bliss. That first day wrapped with us huddled inside, stove crackling, playing board games as rain pattered on the roof – proper Scottish weather rolling in. The lodge felt like home already, with its thoughtful touches like fluffy towels and a welcome pack of local shortbread. If you’re after a relaxed family break with pets, a splash of humour in the mishaps, and first impressions that hook you for good, this Classic 3 Bed Lodge is the ticket. We couldn’t wait for day two, but honestly, arriving was half the joy. |
