About Loch Lomond
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, the first impression was pure magic. Nestled in a wee wooded spot by Loch Fyne, it’s one of those timber beauties with a private hot tub decked out on the veranda, overlooking the glassy water. Pets welcome, thank goodness – Monty bolted straight out, sniffing every fern like he owned the place. The sun was peeking through for our arrival, casting a golden glow on the loch, and I thought, “This is it, three days of bliss.” We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just soaked it in. The lodge itself? Cosy as owt, with three snug bedrooms, a cracking kitchen, and that hot tub bubbling away like it was begging for a dip. First impressions? Spot on – it felt like our own little Highland hideaway, dead central for Loch Lomond wanders without straying far. Next morning, I was buzzing for a hike. Weather app promised blue skies, so we headed out for the local trails around Cairndow – nothing too gnarly, just a gentle 4-mile loop along the lochside paths towards the head of Loch Fyne. Monty was in his element, splashing in shallow burns and chasing midges (poor sod ended up with a face full of them). The views? Stunning – misty hills rolling down to the water, herons flapping lazily overhead, and the scent of pine everywhere. We proper yomped it, me pretending I’m some Bear Grylls type, though I was knackered after 20 minutes. Light humour kicked in when I slipped on a muddy patch – straight on my arse into a puddle. “Graceful as a Highland cow,” laughed my partner, snapping a pic. We howled, brushed off, and carried on, the sun warming our backs. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. By noon, the sky turned from blue to battleship grey faster than you can say “soggy socks.” Torrential rain hammered down, turning our path into a stream. Plans for a longer trek to the nearby woods? Scrubbed. We legged it back to the lodge, drenched to the bone, laughing like loons. Monty looked like a drowned rat, shaking water everywhere. First impressions of the weather’s mood swings? A right laugh, but humbling. Sat in the lounge with cups of tea, watching the loch whip up into frothy waves, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Here I was, mid-40s, chasing hikes like I was 20 again, but really, it’s these cock-ups – the slip-ups, the sudden squalls – that make you appreciate the simple stuff. The lodge’s warmth, Monty’s wet nose on my knee, the rain pattering on the roof. Proper grounding. Afternoon brought a cheeky break in the clouds, so we nipped out for a shorter amble along the shore path, just a mile or so from the door. Windy as hell, but exhilarating – gusts whipping the water into whitecaps, us battling along with hoods up, Monty tugging like a tugboat. Back by dusk, straight into the hot tub. Steaming under the stars (well, half-stars through the clouds), loch views twinkling, it was the perfect reset. That first day’s rollercoaster of weather-driven walks cemented it: this lodge isn’t just a stay, it’s a front-row seat to Loch Lomond’s wild whims. Can’t wait to return – next time, I’m packing extra sandwiches. |
