About Loch Lomond
I’ll never forget the drive up to Helensburgh for my three-day jaunt to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Loch Lomond. It was one of those classic Scottish summer days—grey skies threatening rain, but with that promise of crisp air that makes you feel alive. I’d chucked my rucksack in the boot of my wee hatchback, blasted some indie tunes, and set off from Glasgow, figuring the 45-minute scoot along the A82 would be a doddle. Aye, right. Ten minutes in, I managed to spill my flask of builder’s tea all over the passenger seat—properly soaked it, like I’d tried to baptise the upholstery. Laughing at my own daftness, I pulled over near Rennie’s Lamp, that iconic lighthouse beacon right on Helensburgh’s seafront, to mop up with some old rags. A minor calamity, but it set the tone: this trip was about embracing the unplanned, the hidden nooks you stumble upon when things go a bit pear-shaped.

By the time I rolled up to the lodge, the sun was peeking through, casting a golden glow over Loch Lomond’s shimmering waters. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Helensburgh, this one-bed gem felt like a secret hideaway—wooden cladding blending into the surrounding trees, with a private hot tub bubbling invitingly on the deck. First impressions? Pure bliss. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cold Irn-Bru from the fridge (fully stocked, bless the hosts), and just stood there, breathing in the briny tang of the Clyde mixed with pine. No tourist hordes, no coach parties—just me, the lapping water, and the distant cry of gulls. It was like the universe had whispered, “Slow down, mate.”

Keen to explore before the light faded, I grabbed my wellies and wandered out, no map, no itinerary. That’s the magic of Loch Lomond—get lost, and you’ll find the good stuff. Five minutes from the lodge, I veered off the main path near Helensburgh Pier and onto a scrubby trail hugging the shoreline. What a find! A secluded pebble beach, hidden by overhanging branches, where the water was so clear I could see tiny fish darting about. I skimmed stones for ages, chuckling as most plopped straight in like lead weights—my coordination’s not what it used to be. Sitting there on a driftwood log, I reflected gently on how often I barrel through life glued to my phone, missing these quiet pockets of peace. This spot, unknown to Google Maps, felt like a personal gift.

Emboldened, I pushed further along the water’s edge, ducking under a canopy of ancient oaks. Round a bend, bam—another accidental gem: a forgotten Victorian bandstand, half-swallowed by ivy, overlooking a tiny cove. Legend has it it was used for seaside concerts back in the day, but now it’s just birdsong and waves. I perched on the splintery steps, munching a cheese roll, watching a heron stalk the shallows like a feathered detective. No crowds, no signs—just raw, unpolished Scotland. The humour hit when a cheeky squirrel nicked a crust right from my hand; I yelped, it scarpered up a tree with its prize, tail flicking triumphantly. Cheeky wee sod.

As dusk crept in, I looped back towards the lodge, unearthing one more treasure: a narrow path through ferns leading to a wildflower meadow, buzzing with bees and butterflies. Right on the doorstep, yet worlds away from the High Street bustle. Slipping into the hot tub under a canopy of stars, steam rising into the cool night, I sank back with a contented sigh. That first day’s wanderings—born from a tea-spilling mishap—reminded me why I love these escapes. In Loch Lomond’s overlooked corners, getting lost isn’t a mistake; it’s the whole point. Can’t wait to return and lose myself all over again.
