About Inverness
I finally made it to Inverness after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Edinburgh – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn onto some winding B-road and ending up chasing a flock of sheep for ten minutes while swearing under my breath at the satnav. Classic me, always turning a straightforward journey into a minor adventure. But as I pulled into the drive of Cromarty Lodge just on the edge of town, all that stress melted away. Tucked in a quiet spot about five minutes from Inverness centre, this cosy little lodge looked like it had been waiting just for me, promising three days of pure, unadulterated doing bugger all.

Stepping through the door that first afternoon, I was hit with that instant hit of homey bliss. The living room was all warm wood beams, a cracking wood-burning stove (already stocked with logs, bless the hosts), and a massive squishy sofa that practically swallowed me whole as I flopped down with a sigh. Sunlight streamed through the windows onto the plush rug, and I could smell that faint, welcoming whiff of fresh linen from the kitchen. It was one of those places that screams 'relax, you daft sod – you've earned it'. No grand hotel lobby, no frantic check-in; just me, my weekend bag, and the joy of switching off.

First impressions? Perfection for a lazy getaway. The lodge sleeps four comfortably, but I had it all to myself – selfish, I know, but ideal for solo slobbing. I dumped my stuff and headed straight for the garden out back. It's a proper suntrap, enclosed and private, with a wooden deck, chiminea, and those fairy lights strung up for evenings that stretch into twilight. I cracked open a cold beer from the local Co-op I'd nipped into on the way (pro tip: stock up on Irn-Bru too, it's practically law up here), and just sat there, feet up, listening to the birds and the distant hum of the River Ness. No itinerary, no rush – that's the magic of Cromarty Lodge. It's close enough to wander into town if you fancy, but why would you when paradise is right here?

That evening, I lit the stove – easy as pie, with the firelighters provided – and curled up with a dog-eared copy of a Rebus novel I'd brought along. The flames crackled away, casting a lovely glow, and I munched on cheese toasties made in the well-equipped kitchen. No faffing about with fancy recipes; just simple, comforting grub. Looking around, I had a proper moment of self-reflection: life's been a mad whirl lately with work deadlines piling up like Highland mist. Here I was, mid-forties and knackered, realising I needed this slowdown more than I thought. No emails pinging, no notifications – just the joy of doing very little and feeling all the better for it.

Next morning, I ambled out for a gentle explore, keeping it local as per my 'minimal effort' plan. A ten-minute stroll took me to the banks of the Ness, where I watched salmon leap (or tried to; mostly I just skimmed stones and chuckled at my rubbish aim). Back at the lodge, it was garden lounging all over again – reading under the parasol, dozing off with the Sunday papers, maybe a cheeky nap on the hammock they’ve got strung between the trees. Lunch was a lazy picnic of crisps and sandwiches on the deck, with the chiminea fired up for warmth even on a breezy Scottish day. Afternoon? More book time, interspersed with gazing at the sky and pondering how brilliant it is to have nowhere to be.

By day three, I was properly hooked on this slow-life lark. A final potter around the nearby Leakey's Bookshop in town – second-hand heaven, where I snagged a bargain on some Scottish poetry – then back to the lodge for stove-gazing and tea. Cromarty Lodge isn't about ticking off sights; it's about savouring the small stuff: the cosiness, the garden peace, the sheer delight of pottering without purpose. If you're after a Highland escape that recharges your soul through sheer inertia, this is your spot. I drove home feeling lighter than when I arrived, already plotting my return for more of the same. What a cracking find.
