About Fife
I’ll never forget the drive up to our three-bed lodge in St Andrews, Fife, last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the leaves were turning all shades of gold and rust, carpeting the roads like a proper Highland fling gone rogue. We’d piled into the car from Edinburgh, me navigating with my dodgy phone signal, and about halfway through, just past Kirkcaldy, I managed to spill my flask of tea right across the passenger seat. “Brilliant,” I muttered, as my mate wiped it up with a service station napkin, laughing that it was my way of christening the trip. Nothing major, just the sort of daft mishap that sets the tone for a proper Scottish getaway, especially when the season’s turning and the air’s got that bracing bite.

By the time we trundled into St Andrews, the low sun was dipping behind the ancient university spires, casting long shadows over the East Sands beach. Autumn in Fife is magic like that – not the howling gales of winter yet, but with enough chill to make you glad of a woolly jumper, and the Fife Coastal Path glowing underfoot with fallen leaves. Our lodge, tucked away in a quiet spot just a short stroll from the town centre, popped into view like a cosy hug from the landscape. It’s one of those proper log cabins, all warm wood and pitched roof, nestled among trees that were shedding their foliage in a gentle shower as we pulled up. The drive had taken barely an hour, but it felt like stepping into another world, where the sea mist rolled in from St Andrews Bay and the scent of damp earth hung in the air.

First impressions? Pure bliss. We unloaded the boot under a sky streaked with pink and orange, the kind of sunset that screams ‘Fife in fall’. The lodge door swung open to reveal a surprisingly spacious open-plan living area, with a wood-burning stove already set with kindling – thank heavens, because that autumn nip had us shivering after the spill-induced faff. Three comfy bedrooms upstairs, each with those fluffy duvets begging to be dived into, and a kitchen kitted out for lazy mornings with fresh scones from the local bakery. Outside, a private hot tub steamed invitingly under a pergola draped in ivy turning fiery red. I dipped a toe in straight away, giggling as the warmth cut through the cooling evening air. “This is living,” I said, while my mates cracked open a couple of Tennent’s, toasting the season’s glory.

That first evening shaped everything. We wandered down to the West Sands – you know, the one from Chariots of Fire – where the tide was out, exposing vast expanses of glistening sand under a harvest moon. The waves crashed with that rhythmic Fife roar, and the wind whipped up leaves that danced around our ankles like mischievous sprites. Back at the lodge, we lit the stove, its crackle mingling with the patter of rain starting on the roof – classic autumn Scotland, turning cosy indoors what might’ve been dreich outside. We rustled up venison stew from the butcher in town, using herbs from the garden patch that was still thriving despite the frosts nipping at its heels. Sat round the table, faces glowing in the firelight, we chatted bollocks about life, the universe, and why Fife’s beaches beat anywhere else this time of year.

It got me reflecting, though, as I stared into the flames that first night. Here I was, mid-forties, still spilling tea and making a hash of directions, yet in this wee lodge with the autumn woods whispering outside, everything felt right. The season strips it back, doesn’t it? No summer crowds, just the raw beauty of Fife – the russet dunes, the salty tang in the air, the way the light softens everything at dusk. That three-day jaunt was barely begun, but already I knew: this was the perfect spot to let the year wind down, mishaps and all.
