About Fife
I finally made it to St Andrews after a bit of a faff on the road from Edinburgh – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn onto one of those narrow Fife lanes that looked promising on the satnav but ended up being a single-track affair with hedges clawing at the car mirrors. Chuckling to myself, I reversed for what felt like miles until a local farmer waved me through with a cheery thumbs-up. Classic me, always turning a 45-minute drive into an unintended scenic tour.

Pulling up to the 2 Bed Lodge just outside St Andrews, I was instantly smitten. Tucked away in a quiet spot amid rolling fields, this wee log cabin felt like a hug from the Scottish countryside. The owners had left the key in a handy lockbox, and as I unlocked the door, the scent of fresh pine and a hint of woodsmoke wafted out – pure bliss. It was compact but ever so cosy: two snug bedrooms with those plush beds begging for a nap, a compact kitchen kitted out with everything you'd need for lazy brekkies, and a living area with a wood-burning stove that promised evenings of pure hygge. Outside, the private garden was my favourite bit – a sun-trap patio with chairs overlooking a wildish lawn dotted with birds flitting about. No neighbours in sight, just the gentle hum of Fife life.

First impressions? Heaven for anyone who, like me, craves doing bugger all. After dumping my bags, I cracked open a tin of soup (brought from home, naturally), heated it on the hob, and flopped onto the sofa with a book I'd been meaning to read for months. The windows framed perfect views of the East Neuk horizon, all soft greens and distant sea glimpses. No agenda, no rush – just the joy of sinking into that squishy couch, turning pages, and letting the world slow to a crawl. I must've dozed off for an hour, waking to the sun dipping low. Hilarious how liberating it felt not to check my phone every five minutes.

Day two dawned misty, typical Fife weather, but by elevenses it had burned off into a cracker of a day. I pottered in the garden, brewing tea on a camping stove I'd spotted by the patio, then sprawled out reading more. The lodge's quiet was magic – no traffic, just birdsong and the odd sheep bleating nearby. Fancying a gentle wander, I ambled less than a mile down the lane to a nearby farm shop for local tatties, cheese, and a slab of tablet that stuck to my teeth gloriously. Back at the lodge, I sliced it up with some cheddar for lunch, eaten al fresco while watching clouds scud overhead. No grand hikes, no tourist traps – just that simple pleasure of stretching out time.

By evening, with the stove crackling (I'd foraged some twigs from the garden edge), I reflected on how knackered I've been lately from city hustle. Sitting there in the lodge's warm glow, mug of tea in hand, I realised slowing down isn't lazy – it's essential. This place stripped everything back to basics: good light for reading, a comfy spot to sit, and the sheer delight of nowhere to be. No wonder Fife folk have that unflappable calm.

My three days blurred into one long, lovely exhale. If you're after a reset without the effort, hunt down a spot like 2 Bed Lodge – it's the antidote to modern madness.
