About Dumfries And Galloway
I’d just crossed the border into Scotland, humming along to some cracking indie tunes on the radio, when disaster struck – or rather, splattered. About ten miles shy of Newton Stewart, a rogue flock of sheep decided my windscreen was their personal canvas, courtesy of one particularly enthusiastic ram who’d clearly mistaken my hire car for a rival. Daubed in muck and muttering about rural driving etiquette, I pulled over near the Cree estuary to give it a wipe. Little did I know, that daft mishap was the perfect opener to my three-day jaunt at Pondview Retreat Lodge in Dumfries and Galloway.

The drive from there was pure bliss, winding through those lush, undulating hills that make this corner of Scotland feel like a secret kept from the masses. Pondview sits just outside Newton Stewart, tucked into a serene spot with the River Cree murmuring nearby and woodland whispering on the breeze. Pulling up late afternoon, I was gobsmacked by the lodge itself – a cosy wooden haven with a veranda that screams “put your feet up and forget the world”. The hot tub bubbled invitingly under a canopy of stars already peeking out, and inside, it was all exposed beams, plush sofas, and a kitchen that made my city flat look like a broom cupboard. First impressions? Heaven on a quiet lane.

But the real magic kicked off when I ditched the satnav and embraced getting lost – my favourite holiday hack. That first evening, instead of heading straight for the obvious chippy in Newton Stewart, I veered off down a unmarked track by the lodge, chasing a glimpse of the river I’d spotted on arrival. Ten minutes of pothole-dodging later, I stumbled on a hidden gem: a wee sandy beach along the Cree, completely deserted save for a pair of oystercatchers piping away. I cracked open a tin of Irn-Bru, kicked off my boots, and paddled in the peaty shallows. The water was bracing – proper Scottish chill – but the solitude? Priceless. Who needs Blackpool when you’ve got this?

Next morning, fueled by a fry-up courtesy of the lodge’s well-stocked larder (bacon from a local butcher, allegedly), I set off on foot, no map, just curiosity. A wrong turn past the neighbouring fields led me to an off-the-beaten-track spot I’d never have found otherwise: a forgotten kirkyard nestled in a hollow, overgrown with wild garlic and bluebells. Gravestones from the 1700s tilted like gossiping locals, and I spent an hour tracing names, imagining the fishermen and crofters who’d called this patch home. It was one of those moments that stops you in your tracks – gentle self-reflection territory. Here I was, a Londoner who can’t go five minutes without Google, pondering how simplicity like this recharges the soul. Bloody daft, maybe, but true.

By afternoon, another accidental detour – this time cycling the lodge’s bikes along a shady path by the water – unearthed a wild swimming hole locals must whisper about. Fringed by ferns and fed by a tumbling burn, it was crystal clear and utterly peaceful. I took the plunge (regretted it for the first ten seconds, naturally), emerging pink and grinning like an eejit. Back at Pondview, sinking into the hot tub with a dram of something peaty, I reflected on how these hidden corners – born of mishaps and meanders – make Dumfries and Galloway a wanderer’s dream.

That first full day wrapped with sunset from the veranda, the hills glowing gold across the Cree. No tourist traps, no crowds, just serendipitous discoveries that made arrival feel like striking gold. If you fancy ditching the beaten path for proper peace, Pondview’s your spot – get lost, you won’t regret it.
