I’ll never forget the drive up to Castle Douglas last month – a three-day jaunt to that cosy 2 Bed Lodge I’d booked on a whim, craving some proper Dumfries and Galloway peace. The sat-nav was playing silly buggers from the off, insisting we take a detour through some godforsaken B-road near Dalbeattie that turned into a single-track nightmare. We ended up with a branch wedged under the car’s bumper after brushing a hedge – nothing major, just enough to have me swearing like a trooper while my other half laughed and fished it out with a stick. “Welcome to Scotland,” she quipped. By the time we rolled into Castle Douglas, I was knackered but buzzing, the Satnav finally surrendering as we spotted the lodge nestled in its quiet pocket just off the main drag.

Pulling up to the 2 Bed Lodge felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway. Tucked away down a wee lane, it’s the sort of place that doesn’t scream for attention – no neon signs, just a sturdy wooden haven with a veranda begging for a cuppa. First impressions? Pure bliss. The door creaked open to reveal a snug living area with a wood burner that hadn’t even been lit yet, but promised evenings of toasty comfort. Two bedrooms upstairs, simple and spotless, with views peeking out over rolling fields that screamed “get lost out here.” We dumped the bags, cracked open a tin of soup from the welcome pack (nice touch, that), and I thought, blimey, this is exactly what I needed after months of city grind.

But the real magic kicked in when we decided to wander, no map, no plan – just the pull of those hidden Dumfries and Galloway gems you only find by accident. Stepping out from the lodge, we veered left instead of right, down a footpath that snaked behind the property towards the River Dee. Within minutes, we’d ditched the tarmac for a proper off-the-beaten-track ramble, the kind where brambles snag your jeans and you’re grinning like an idiot. First gem: a forgotten wee bridge over a bubbling burn, half-covered in moss, perfect for dangling feet in the icy water. No tourists, no signs – just us, a heron eyeing us suspiciously, and the sound of water chuckling over stones. I splashed about like a daft kid, nearly toppling in, which had us in stitches. “You’re 40, not four,” she teased.

Pushing on, we got properly lost in the best way, looping through woodland trails that locals must use for dog walks but felt like our private Narnia. Emerged at a hidden spot by Carlingwark Loch – not the main car park bit everyone knows, but a scruffy inlet where the water laps at wildflower banks. We picnicked on cheese rolls from the village shop, watching otters frolic (or was it just ducks? Who cares). It was one of those moments that hits you gentle-like: sat there, breeze in my hair, realising how bollocksed I’d been letting work chew me up. Why chase Instagram hotspots when this – accidental, unkempt beauty – recharges the soul?

Back at the lodge by dusk, first impressions sealed, we lit that fire and cracked a bottle of local Dalbeattie ale. The mishap on the road? Forgotten. Those off-piste discoveries? The highlight of day one. Castle Douglas and its surrounds are full of these sneaky pleasures – get lost, and they find you. Can’t wait to return and lose myself again.
