About Aviemore
I finally made it to Red Deer Lodge in Aviemore after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Edinburgh. Picture this: me, the wife, and our two lads crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed a Highland regiment, when wouldn't you know it, I take a wrong turn just past Kingussie and end up on some single-track road staring at a sheep that looked as baffled as I was. "Dad, you're lost again," pipes up ten-year-old Finn from the back, while seven-year-old Max giggles and films it on his tablet. Classic me—always the navigator who thinks sat-navs are for wimps. Twenty minutes and a three-point turn later (involving a lot of reverse hooting), we're back on track, rolling into Aviemore just as the late afternoon sun dipped behind the Cairngorms.

Pulling up to Red Deer Lodge felt like stumbling into a proper Highland hug. It's this cosy wee timber lodge tucked away in a peaceful spot on the edge of the village, surrounded by pines that whisper in the wind. We parked on the gravel drive—crunch, crunch—and there it was, all warm wood and welcoming windows glowing against the gloaming. The key safe was right where the booking said, and as I punched in the code, the boys were already dashing about like feral puppies, poking at the bird feeders dangling from the eaves. "Look, Mum! Red squirrels!" Ellie shouted, though it turned out to be a cheeky robin. First impressions? Blissfully remote yet just a hop from Aviemore's high street—perfect for our relaxed family break.

Stepping inside was pure lodge magic. The open-plan living area hit us with that instant "ahh" factor: a massive wood-burning stove (already stocked with logs, bless the hosts), squishy sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that screamed "cook fry-ups here." The smell of pine mingled with fresh linen as we dumped our bags. "This is better than home!" Max declared, flinging himself onto the rug. Aye, lad, it was—spacious enough for us lot without feeling echoey. Up the wooden stairs (with that satisfying creak), the bedrooms were cracking: our king-sized one with views straight out to the hills, and the boys' twin room kitted out with bunks they immediately claimed in a wrestling match. Chaos level: high, but the heart-melting kind.

We unpacked amid the usual lodge-life pandemonium—socks everywhere, wellies by the door for tomorrow's Rothiemurchus estate wander. Ellie rustled up tea while I got the stove going, sparks flying as the boys "helped" by chucking in twigs they'd gathered outside. First dinner was simple pleasures personified: fish fingers, beans, and buttered bannocks from the local shop we'd nipped into on arrival. Sat round the oak table, windows steaming up, we watched deer silhouettes graze in the field beyond. "Proper wild, this," I said, and Ellie just smiled, knowing I'd romanticise anything with a view.

That first evening, as the boys conked out early from fresh air overload, I sat by the fire with a dram from the offie, reflecting gently on how these little escapes reset the soul. Work's been manic, you know? Deadlines and dad guilt piling up. But here, in Red Deer Lodge's snug embrace, with Aviemore's gentle hum just down the road—Rothiemurchus trails calling, the Cairngorm reindeer centre a quick scoot away—it was a reminder that simple joys trump it all. No grand plans, just family, flames, and that Highland hush. Can't wait for day two, but blooming heck, what a cracking start.
