About Aviemore
The lodge itself is a cracking wee spot, tucked just on the edge of Aviemore, all cosy stone and timber with views that make you want to bin off your inbox forever. But honestly, what made the first hours unforgettable weren't the fluffy towels or the wood-burning stove—it was the locals. Proper characters, every one of them, the sort you only meet in places like this where everyone's got a story and a cheeky grin. First off, there was Moira, the no-nonsense landlady who handed over the keys at the nearby office. She's got this wild mane of silver hair and a laugh like a Highland cow's bellow. "Ye'll no be needin' that fancy sat-nav here, lad," she says, eyeing my tea-stained trousers with a wink. "Follow the pine martens—they know the way." Turned out she'd named the lodge after the wee beasts that scamper about the gardens at dusk, and she spent ten minutes regaling me with tales of spotting them mid-winter, nicking bird feeders like furry bandits. I asked if they ever caused bother, and she cackled: "Ach, they're saints compared to the tourists who leave the gate open!" We chatted about her life running the place for 30 years, dodging midges and welcoming everyone from posh walkers to hungover stag dos. By the time I left, she'd slipped me a map scribbled with her secret spots for the Rothiemurchus Estate trails, just a short stroll away. Laden with bags, I wandered into Aviemore's high street for supplies—milk, bread, and a cheeky dram from the Speyside distillery shop. That's where I bumped into Tam, the butcher at the Old Bridge Inn end of the street. He's a burly chap with a beard that could hide a family of pine martens, doling out venison sausages like they're going out of fashion. "First time in Aviemore?" he boomed, wrapping up my order. I nodded, confessing my tea disaster, and he roared with laughter. "Lad, that's nowt—last week a lad from London drove his Jag into a pothole and ended up with venison in his radiator!" Tam's been slinging meat here since the '80s, back when the funicular was just a pipe dream. He rabbiting on about the Cairngorm reindeer herd wandering too close for comfort, and how the locals once herded them back with nothing but terriers and swearing. "Ye staying at Pine Marten? Tell Moira Tam says hello—she owes me a pint from the Highland Games." I promised I would, chuckling at his tales of the annual games, where caber-tossing turns grown men into wobbly jelly. Later, as I settled into the lodge with a cuppa on the deck, savouring those first impressions of mist rolling off the Spey, along came wee Jock, the estate gamekeeper cycling past on a rusty bike. He stopped for a blether after spotting my English plates—salt of the earth, with a flat cap and a dog called Rory that looked like it'd eaten half the hills. "Pine Marten, eh? Grand spot. Mind the otters in the burn—they'll steal your sandwiches faster than a fox." Jock's stories were gold: poachers he'd outfoxed, the time a pine marten kit fell down his chimney ("wee bugger climbed right back up!"), and how Aviemore's changed but the characters haven't. "We're all mad here," he grinned, "but it's the good mad." As the sun dipped behind the Cairngorms, I sat there reflecting gently—me, the city lad who'd spilled his tea and stumbled into this lot. In three days? Nah, just those first hours showed me why places like Pine Marten Lodge feel like home. It's not the views or the quiet; it's Moira's map, Tam's sausages, Jock's yarns—the quirky souls who make Aviemore pulse. Can't wait to dive deeper tomorrow. |
