About York
Pulling up to the lodge just outside York’s bustling heart, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet spot that feels worlds from the tourist hordes, it’s one of those cosy dog-friendly cottages that screams “proper Yorkshire welcome”. Picture a snug stone-built haven with a private hot tub bubbling away like it’s waiting to melt your stresses, and a garden that backs onto woodland paths begging to be wandered. First impressions? Bliss. We dumped our bags, cracked open a brew, and just soaked it in – the kind of place where you feel instantly at home, far from the selfie-stick crowds at York Minster. But the real magic kicked off straight away with our aimless wanderings. No grand plans, just a fancy to get lost in York’s back lanes. We nipped out for a mooch and accidentally veered off the main drags near the lodge, ending up in the hidden alleys of Layerthorpe. It’s this unassuming nook, barely a mile from our door, where you dodge the Shambles’ tat shops and find weathered stone cottages hiding teeny cafes. We stumbled into one called – well, it was something like “Brew Haven”, a hole-in-the-wall spot run by a cheery local who plonked down the best flat white I’ve had in ages, with flapjacks so crumbly they nearly defeated my lap. Light humour there: I dropped crumbs everywhere, looking like a right numpty while Sarah laughed her socks off. Kept going, didn’t we? The joy of no itinerary meant we proper got lost in Tang Hall, another off-the-beaten-track gem just a short stroll away. It’s all residential charm with unexpected pockets of wildness – we turned a corner and bam, there’s this pocket park with ancient oaks and a babbling beck that locals call their secret. No blue plaques or TripAdvisor hype, just benches for pondering life and ducks quacking for your sarnies. I sat there a moment, gently reflecting on how daft it is we chase the big sights when these quiet corners recharge you proper. York’s got that knack, doesn’t it? Layers of history without the fanfare. Back at the lodge by teatime, first day done, and we were already plotting more accidental adventures. Fired up the BBQ in the garden, hot tub steaming under the stars, and chatted about how Holly Tree Lodge PF nailed it – peaceful base for serendipitous discoveries. That sheep delay? Best thing that happened. York’s not just the Minster or the walls; it’s these lost lanes and lodge vibes that make you feel like you’ve nicked a slice of the real deal. Can’t wait to go back and lose myself all over again. |
