About York
I’ll never forget the absolute faff of getting to Holly Tree Lodge Accessible in York – our three-day getaway that started with all the grace of a lorry unloading spuds on a roundabout. We’d piled into the car from Leeds that grey Friday morning, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best, me shotgun with a thermos of tea and hubby driving, promising it’d be a breeze. York’s only 25 miles door-to-door, but oh no, not for us. About five minutes from the A64 turn-off, I knocked my tea over in a heroic attempt to grab a rogue crisp packet. Cue pandemonium: brown liquid sloshing across the dash, hubby swearing like a trooper (“Bloody hell, love, it’s in me lap now!”), and me dabbing futilely with a service station napkin that just smeared it everywhere. We pulled over near the York ring road, laughing hysterically through the chaos, windows down to air out the Earl Grey fug. Minor disaster averted, but I was already vowing no more hot drinks en route.

By the time we trundled into York proper, past the medieval city walls that always make my heart skip – those sturdy stone beauties guarding treasures like York Minster – we were fashionably late, covered in tea stains and proper windswept. The lodge is tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the main drag, close enough to the city centre that you could leg it to the Shambles in 20 minutes flat, but far enough for that cosy rural vibe. Spotting the “Holly Tree Lodge” sign was like stumbling on buried treasure; we parked up on the gravel drive, gravel crunching underfoot like a proper welcome mat, and there she was: this gorgeous, low-slung accessible cottage with holly trees framing the front like nature’s own doormat. I hopped out first, key fob in hand from the SnapTrip lot, and proper clocked the ramp up to the door – smooth as you like, wide enough for a wheelchair or just us lot with our overstuffed bags.

Pushing open that front door was pure magic. First impressions? Blimey, it hit like a warm hug. The open-plan living space unfolded right there, all light and airy with big windows letting in that soft Yorkshire daylight. Plump sofas in neutral tones begged you to flop down, and the kitchen was a dream – shiny worktops, a massive American-style fridge (perfect for stuffing with Yorkshire cheeses from the nearby market), and even a cheek-height oven that had me grinning like an idiot. “No bending for you, you lazy sod,” I joked to myself, thinking of my dodgy knees after years of chasing kids. We dumped our bags and proper explored: the accessible bedroom just off the lounge, with its super-king bed piled high with feather pillows, en-suite wet room that could fit a rugby team (rainfall shower, grab rails everywhere, no faffing about), and those little touches like lowered light switches and a fold-down ironing board. It felt thoughtful, not clinical – like someone had actually stayed here with real-life needs.

Hubby wandered out back while I brewed a fresh cuppa (lesson learned: use a travel mug next time). The private patio was cracking – flagged stone underfoot, bordered by those holly trees buzzing with birds, and a table with brollies for when the inevitable rain hits. You could hear the faint hum of York life in the distance – Jorvik Centre tours chugging by, maybe – but it was dead peaceful, a proper sanctuary. Sat there with my tea, watching him faff with the BBQ (unlit, mind, it was barely noon), I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s full of spills and scrambles, innit? That daft tea mishap had us in stitches, but landing here made it all worthwhile. York’s magic is in these hidden gems – close to the Minster’s gothic spires and the Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gr gate, yet worlds away from the tourist scrum. First impressions sealed it: Holly Tree Lodge wasn’t just accessible; it was ace. We’d struck gold, tea stains and all.
