About York
Pulling up to the lodge just off the A64, bang on the edge of York, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper cosy pet-friendly spots, tucked into a peaceful little holiday park vibe, perfect for families wanting a chilled-out base without the city hustle right away. The accessible setup was spot-on too—no faffing with steps, wide doors everywhere, which made unloading our chaos a doddle. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the first thing that hit me was the fresh air, mingled with that earthy scent of holly trees rustling nearby. The lodge itself is a beaut: wooden cladding giving it that storybook cottage feel, with a private patio already begging for a cuppa. Stepping inside, it was love at first sight. Spacious open-plan living area with a cracking wood-burning stove (we didn't light it yet, but I could picture cosy evenings ahead), squashy sofas that swallowed you whole, and a kitchen kitted out better than ours at home—full-size cooker, massive fridge, even a Nespresso machine for my fancy coffee habits. The lads immediately claimed the bunk beds in their room, bouncing like kangaroos while I pretended to tell them off. Our en-suite master was a treat: huge walk-in shower, grab rails if needed, and views out to the garden. Everything felt clean as a whistle, thoughtfully laid out for real family life—no pretentious nonsense, just practical bliss. First impressions? Pure relaxation central. We dumped the bags and cracked open a round of teas—milk for the boys, proper builder's for me—settling on the patio as the sun peeked through Yorkshire clouds. The kids were straight out exploring the lodge's little garden, poking at butterflies and "hunting dragons" in the hedges, while I watched with a grin, thinking how rare it is to switch off so quick. That insignificant tractor palaver felt miles away already. A gentle wander around the immediate park paths revealed a playground just a stone's throw off, swings creaking invitingly, and other families milling about with dogs on leads—proper community feel without any aggro. By teatime, we'd rustled up fish fingers and chips in the kitchen, spilling ketchup everywhere in that joyful lodge-life chaos kids bring. Sat round the table, windows open to the birdsong, I had one of those quiet moments of self-reflection: rushing about work back home, I forget how simple pleasures like this recharge the batteries. No grand plans for York centre yet—that's for tomorrow, a quick five-minute drive to the Minster or Shambles if we fancy—but right here, first day in, Holly Tree Lodge had us hooked. It's the sort of place that wraps you in comfort, mishaps and all, whispering "stay a while." Can't wait to see what day two brings. |
