One of York's most famous landmarks, Shambles is one of England's best-preserved medieval shopping streets. Believed to inspire Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. Plenty of curiosities, dog-friendly pubs and accommodation.

About York
I finally made it to York's Floating Lodge after a bit of a faff on the train from Leeds—spilled my cuppa all over my lap just as we pulled into the station, leaving me looking like I'd wet myself in front of a carriage full of stern pensioners. Typical me, innit? But as I hopped off at York station, towel-drying my trousers and lugging my weekend bag, the anticipation of three lazy days ahead washed away the embarrassment. No grand plans, no ticking off tourist boxes—just me, a cosy floating bolthole on the River Ouse, and the sheer joy of doing bugger all.

The taxi dropped me right at the lodge's private mooring, tucked away in a peaceful spot along the riverbank, just a short hop from York's historic heart. There she was, bobbing gently on the water like a posh houseboat dream: all timber cladding and big windows, with a cheeky little garden decked out in flower pots and loungers overlooking the rippling Ouse. I unlocked the door with the key code, stepped inside, and proper exhaled. It was like the universe had handed me a hug—compact but lush, with a wood-burner stove begging to be lit, squidgy sofas piled with cushions, and a kitchenette stocked with tea, coffee, and those posh Yorkshire biscuits. The bedroom upstairs had a massive bed with views straight out to the water, and the bathroom? Spotless, with fluffy towels that screamed "relax, you daft sod."

First impressions? Blissful isolation without feeling cut off. From the deck, I could hear the distant chime of York's Minster bells and spot rowers gliding past on the river, but it was all background noise to my master plan: sod all. I cracked open a book I'd been meaning to read for months—some light-hearted thriller—and sank into a lounger with a brew. The garden was tiny but perfect, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a couple of bird feeders twitching with feisty robins. I spent that first afternoon just there, feet up, watching clouds drift by. No deadlines, no emails, just the gentle slap of water against the hull. Laughed at myself when a duck waddled up demanding crumbs—cheeky beggar nearly nicked my biscuit.

As dusk fell, I fancied a gentle potter—no marathon walks, mind. York's walls are only a ten-minute amble away, so I strolled along the Ouse path, past Museum Gardens where families picnicked under ancient trees. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and chippy vinegar, and I grabbed fish and chips from a riverside van, wrapping up in the cool evening breeze back at the lodge. Sat on the deck with my supper, steam rising, watching the city lights flicker on across the water. It was magical, that quiet hum of York life without being slap bang in the Minster crowds.

That first evening, as I lit the wood-burner and curled up with my book, a wee moment of reflection hit me. Life's always rushing—work, kids' football, the endless scroll. Here, floating on the Ouse, I realised slowing down isn't lazy; it's bloody essential. No heroic adventures needed; just this lodge, its cosy nooks, and the simple thrill of time stretching out. By bedtime, lulled by the river's lullaby, I was already plotting tomorrow's "agenda": more reading, maybe a lazy loop round the walls at snail's pace, and definitely another deck lounger session. York had me hooked, but it was this floating gem that stole the show—pure, unadulterated chill. Can't wait to return and do even less.
