About York
First impressions? Blimey, it felt like stepping onto my own private narrowboat dream. Arrived mid-afternoon, dumped my bags, and the river was lapping gently outside the French doors – pure bliss after the train chaos. But let's be honest, the real star here is the food scene, innit? York does grub like nowhere else, and staying on the water meant I could potter out for fresh bits from the Shambles market, just a ten-minute stroll away. That first evening, I fancied cooking something simple in the lodge's slick kitchen – grabbed some local cheeses, crusty bread, and a slab of Yorkshire ham from the market stalls. Tried my hand at a posh ploughman's with pickled onions I chopped myself (ended up more like onion confetti after a wobbly knife job). Paired it with a cheeky local ale from the fridge, watching the sun dip over the Foss. Proper homely, but with that floating magic making it feel dead special. Next morning, woke to the sound of ducks quacking – no alarm clock needed. First impressions ramped up when I nipped out for breakfast fodder from the nearby Bootham area markets. Snagged some smoked kippers from a fishmonger (York's river-fresh, they swear by it) and attempted a full English in the lodge galley. Sausages sizzling, eggs frying, but I overdid the black pudding and it turned into a brick – light humour in the mirror, innit? Me, master chef, serving up hockey pucks. Chuckled to myself over a cuppa, reflecting gently on how these daft kitchen fails are what holidays are about: no rush, no perfection, just you and a pan, learning life's little lessons one burnt edge at a time. Couldn't resist the pubs after that. The first proper meal out was lunch at The Golden Fleece, a proper York boozer just a hop from the lodge, with its creaky beams and ghost stories (they claim a spectral monk haunts the upstairs). Went for their pie and mash – flaky pastry stuffed with proper Yorkshire beef, drowned in gravy that could make you weep. Followed by a pint of Black Sheep ale, bitter and brilliant. Back at the lodge, I rustled up a salad from market veg – rocket, tomatoes, feta – but added too much vinegar, puckering up like I'd sucked a lemon. Laughed it off with the river view, feeling that quiet glow of contentment. Evening brought the highlight: York's food markets in full swing near Parliament Street, all within easy reach. Loaded up on street eats – a hog roast bap dripping with crackling, then sticky toffee pudding from a van that smelled like heaven. Took it back to the lodge patio for a feast al fresco, feet up on the decking, watching rowers glide past. Tried baking York biscuits in the oven that night (flour, butter, ginger – simple enough), but they spread like they've had one too many. Still, dunked in tea, they were lush. That first full day wrapped with a cheeky curry from a spot like the Rajgopal on nearby Goodramgate – butter chicken so creamy it melted away any cooking sins. Sat on the lodge sofa, belly full, gazing at the twinkling lights on the water. First impressions of the Deluxe Floating Lodge? It's not just a stay; it's a front-row seat to York's edible soul, where every meal, mishap, and market wander ties you closer to the place. Can't wait to return – next time, I'll master that black pudding. |
