About The Shepherd's Rest.

Robin Hood's Bay is one of the prettiest coastal villages in England, with winding cobbled streets and charming houses. This old fishing village, once home to writer Leo Walmsley, nestles between Scarborough and Whitby at the edge of a sweeping bay, fringed by cliffs and moorland. Stroll the shore and cliffs, or tackle long-distance paths like the Cleveland Way. Charming lanes, pubs and cafés make it perfect for exploring Yorkshire's coast.

Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff overlooking the North Sea, the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey stand where a monastery was founded in 657. Climb the 199 steps from town to reach this Anglo-Saxon religious centre.

About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after a drive that started promisingly from the A171 but quickly turned into a comedy of errors. Picture this: me, sat-nav in hand, humming along to some cracking Radio 2 tunes, when suddenly the heavens opened. Torrential rain hammered the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and just as I neared the edge of town, I took a wrong turn down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. Brilliant. There I was, reversing like a learner driver in my little hatchback, wheels spinning in the gloopy North Yorkshire clay, convinced I'd end up towing the car with a local tractor. A sheepish wave to a passing dog walker (who probably thought I was auditioning for a Laurel and Hardy sketch), and I was back on track, heart racing, but laughing at my own daftness. Only me could turn a 20-minute final leg into a full-on rally stage.

By the time I pulled up to The Shepherd's Rest, just a stone's throw from Whitby's bustling heart, the rain had eased to a cheeky drizzle, and the place looked like a proper gem straight out of a postcard. Tucked away in a quiet spot off the main drag, this shepherd's hut – all cosy and characterful – sits amid a neat little garden with those classic Whitby stone walls enclosing it. I parked up on the gravel patch (no more mud baths, thank you very much), grabbed my weekend bag, and fumbled with the key under the porch light. The door creaked open to reveal a space that's tiny but utterly enchanting, like stepping into a snug from a period drama.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The interior's a masterclass in clever design – a double bed piled high with plump feather pillows and a proper duck-down duvet that screamed "sink in and forget the world." Opposite, a wood-burning stove sat ready with a basket of logs, and the air had that faint, welcoming whiff of pine from the fresh linen. I dumped my bag and pottered about: the en-suite shower was compact but gleaming, with hot water on tap (vital after my soggy arrival), and a little kitchenette equipped with a hob, fridge, and even a Nespresso machine – hero status right there for any caffeine fiend like me. Outside, a private patio beckoned with a bistro table and chairs, perfect for a cuppa overlooking the garden's wildflowers nodding in the breeze.

I couldn't resist a quick explore before unpacking. A five-minute wander had me at the edge of the North York Moors, where the heather-strewn paths stretch out invitingly, and Whitby's iconic 199 Steps are just a gentle uphill stroll away. From the hut's garden, you catch glimpses of the abbey ruins silhouetted against the sky – that gothic drama that makes Whitby feel timeless. Back inside, I lit the stove (matches provided, phew), and as the flames crackled to life, I cracked open a bottle of local Yorkshire ale from my boot – a cheeky impulse buy from a farm shop en route. Sat there with the patter of rain on the tin roof, I felt a proper wave of contentment wash over me.

It's funny, isn't it? We rush about life, chasing bigger holidays or flashier spots, but here I was, in this humble shepherd's hut, mud on my boots from a silly mishap, and it felt like the best decision ever. That chaotic arrival only made the peace hit harder – a reminder to embrace the faff and savour the simple joys. As the sun dipped low, painting the hut in golden hues, I toasted to three days of nothing but Whitby's charm, starting with this absolute cracker of a first evening. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
