About Rosemary Retreat.

Whitby, a seaside town and port at the River Esk's mouth in North Yorkshire's Scarborough district, is perfectly placed for exploring Yorkshire's coast and countryside. Enjoy Blue Flag beaches, the North York Moors, winding streets with eateries and shops, harbour sunsets, whale watching, coastal cruises, the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, and Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Near Robin Hood's Bay, Scarborough, and Middlesbrough.

Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff overlooking the North Sea, the Gothic ruins date to a 657-founded monastery, a key Anglo-Saxon religious centre. Climb the 199 steps from town.

About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after a bit of a faff on the A171 – nothing dramatic, just me spilling half a thermos of tea down my shirt five minutes from the turn-off, turning me into a soggy mess before I'd even checked in. Typical me, innit? But as I pulled up to Rosemary Retreat, tucked away in a quiet corner just a short stroll from Whitby's bustling heart, all that faded. This cosy little lodge, with its stone walls and pitched roof, looked like it had been waiting to wrap me up in a proper Yorkshire hug.

Stepping inside for the first time, I was hit by that instant "ahh" feeling – you know, when a place just gets you? The open-plan living space was all warm wood beams, a cracking wood-burning stove (already set with kindling, bless 'em), and squishy sofas piled high with cushions that screamed "plonk yourself down and don't move." The kitchen was compact but kitted out nicely – a Belfast sink, proper Aga vibes from the cooker, and a windowsill groaning under fresh herbs. Upstairs, the bedrooms were snug as a bug, with those lovely sash windows letting in slants of North Sea light. Mine had a superking bed that could've slept a family of otters, and views peeking over the garden hedge towards the abbey ruins on the hill. First impressions? Pure bliss. No grand hotel lobby, just a home from home that whispered "slow down, lad."

We'd come for three lazy days of bugger all, and Rosemary Retreat was perfect for it. Unpacked in ten minutes flat, I cracked open a book – some dog-eared detective novel I'd been saving – and claimed the window seat in the lounge. The garden out back sealed the deal: a proper sun trap with a wooden bench under a pergola dripping with roses, a chimenea for chillier evenings, and pots of lavender buzzing with bees. I spent that first afternoon parked there with a cuppa, toes in the grass, watching the world go by. No itinerary, no rush. Whitby's magic is in its slowdown superpower – you can hear the gulls crying over the harbour, smell the fish and chips wafting from the chippies down the road, but here it all felt distant, like a gentle hum.

A gentle wander into town that evening was as far as we pushed it – just a meander down the cobbled lanes to the swing bridge, past the Magpie Café where the queue for fish suppers snaked out the door (we grabbed some to go, naturally). Back at the retreat, we scoffed them on the garden bench as the sun dipped behind the cliffs, painting everything golden. No hiking the three peaks or queuing for the 199 Steps (though they're right there if you fancy); this was about savouring the nothing. I lit the chimenea, cracked another beer, and let the flames crackle while the harbour lights twinkled. Funny how doing sod all feels like the hardest-earned luxury.

On reflection, staring into those embers that first night, I realised I'd been running on fumes back home – emails, deadlines, the usual whirl. Rosemary Retreat was my reset button, a reminder that joy's in the pauses. No grand adventures needed; just this lodge, its garden hush, and the simple thrill of time stretching out. By bedtime, shirt stain forgotten, I was already plotting day two's "schedule": more reading, maybe a kip in the hammock. Whitby, you've got me hooked on the art of sweet doing nowt.
