About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Scarborough—nothing major, just a rogue seagull dive-bombing my windscreen with what looked suspiciously like a chip, leaving me scrubbing gull guano off the glass at the first layby. Laughable now, but at the time I was muttering about my luck. Still, pulling up to Hazel Lodge just as the late afternoon sun peeked through, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Whitby, this cosy stone cottage felt like a proper North Yorkshire hug—low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, and a garden that opened straight onto rolling fields with the sea winking in the distance. First impressions? Spot on for a three-day getaway focused on walks and letting the weather call the shots.

Day one kicked off with classic British optimism. I laced up my boots, grabbed a thermos of tea from Hazel Lodge's well-stocked kitchen, and headed out for the Cleveland Way path that starts practically from the doorstep. The forecast promised "bright intervals," so I aimed for the cliff-top stroll to Sandsend, about three miles north. The air was crisp, briny, with gorse blooming yellow against the green moors—proper heather heaven. Whitby's abbey ruins loomed on the headland like a gothic postcard, and I paused for a natter with a local dog-walker who reckoned the tide was perfect for beachcombing later. Halfway along, the wind picked up, whipping my hair into a mad frizz, and I chuckled at myself, striding along like a budget Kate Bush in "Wuthering Heights." But then the sky turned moody, fat raindrops plopping down. Plan A—picnic at Sandsend beach—scrapped. I ducked into Hazel Lodge, dripping but grinning, and lit that stove while brewing a proper cuppa. First lesson: pack the waterproofs, even for "bright intervals."

Next morning, undeterred, I plotted a gentler loop around Whitby Harbour, weaving through the cobbled streets to the swing bridge and up the 199 Steps to the abbey. The weather gods were playing nice at first—misty drizzle that lent everything a dreamy haze, the harbour boats bobbing gently, fish and chips wafting from stalls even at 10am. I love that Whitby smell, all salt and smoked kippers. The steps were a thigh-burner, but the view from the top? Sweeping cliffs, crashing waves, and the town nestled like a toy set. Gentle self-reflection hit me there, sat on a bench with the abbey church beside me: life's too short for desk-bound drudgery; these moments of wind-lashed freedom recharge the soul like nothing else. But ha, British weather being what it is, the heavens opened mid-descent—proper Yorkshire rain, sideways and relentless. I sheltered under an overhanging yew tree, laughing at my sodden socks, then scarpered back via the beach path, dodging rock pools turned into mini lagoons.

By afternoon, the sun broke through again, teasing me out for a short ramble along the estuary towards Ruswarp, sticking to paths under two miles from the lodge. Muddy tracks, sheep bleating, and the River Esk gurgling—pure bliss. But as evening drew in, fog rolled off the North Sea, turning the garden at Hazel Lodge into a mystical bubble. Cosied up with a book and leftover scone from the village bakery, I reflected on how the weather had shaped it all: no grand hikes, just these spontaneous, soggy adventures that felt more real, more Whitby. It's the unpredictability that makes these spots magic—plans be damned, boots on, and out you go. If you're after a walkers' haven with weather as your cheeky companion, Hazel Lodge is the ticket. Can't wait for round two.
