About Whitby
I finally made it to Whitby after a bit of a faff on the A171, our ancient Volvo estate spluttering to a halt just past the moors because I'd forgotten to check the petrol gauge. Typical me—rushing off from home with the boot stuffed full of wellies, a cool bag of picnic bits, and enough board games to entertain the kids through a nuclear winter. The AA bloke was a star, topping us up in minutes, and soon we were trundling down into town, the North Sea breeze whipping through the open windows as the abbey ruins loomed on the clifftop like some gothic postcard.

Pulling up to Fern Folly felt like stumbling into a secret garden hideaway. Tucked away in a quiet spot off the main drag, just a short wander from the harbour, this little stone cottage is the sort of place that whispers "relax" before you've even turned the key. We arrived mid-afternoon on a drizzly Friday, the kids—Ellie, 8, and Tom, 5—bouncing out like puppies, while I wrestled the wonky gate that decided to stick just to test my patience. Light humour in the air already: "Mum's on gate duty again," Tom giggled, as I gave it a proper Yorkshire shove.

Stepping inside was pure magic. The lounge is cosy as anything, with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (we got one going later, complete with toasting marshmallows that ended in sticky chaos). Plump sofas in soft greens, a telly tucked away so you actually talk to each other, and those low-beamed ceilings that make you duck if you're over 5'10" like my husband Dave. We dumped the bags and raided the welcome hamper—local scones, jam, and a bottle of Whitby gin that had us grinning. First impressions? Blissful lodge life, the kind where you kick off your shoes and feel the world shrink to this perfect nook.

The kitchen's a dream for family faffing about: Aga humming warmly, all the pots and pans you need for whipping up fish finger suppers or, if you're feeling fancy, a crab salad from the harbour catch. We didn't bother cooking straight off—instead, we unpacked with the sea view from the window calling us. Fern Folly's got this lovely patio out back, ferns everywhere (hence the name, I suppose), with benches perfect for cups of tea while watching the gulls swoop. Ellie claimed it immediately for her "fairy garden," scattering petals she'd nabbed from the wildflowers en route.

Wandering down to the harbour that first evening was the highlight. Five minutes' stroll, past quaint fisherman's cottages and chippy queues already forming. The swing bridge over the Esk was creaking open for boats, and we grabbed fish and chips from a proper no-frills place—crispy batter, mushy peas, the works—eating them on the beach steps as the tide rolled in. Tom chased waves in his too-big wellies, slipping arse-over-tit into a puddle, which had us all in stitches. "Lodge life chaos," Dave laughed, wiping him down. Back at the cottage, we lit that fire, played a rowdy game of Cluedo (I won, suspiciously), and cracked open the gin with tonic from the Co-op.

As I sat there that night, mug of tea in hand, listening to the distant waves and the kids' snores from their snug attic room upstairs, I had a proper moment of reflection. In the rush of school runs and work deadlines, we forget how simple pleasures—like a wonky gate, salty chips, and a firelit hideaway—recharge the soul. Fern Folly isn't flashy; it's real, a gentle nudge to slow down and savour the family muddle. First impressions sealed it: we'll be back for more Whitby whimsy.
