I finally made it to Scarborough after a bit of a faff on the A170 – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn near Pickering and ending up in a queue of caravans crawling along like they were auditioning for a snail race. Typical me, innit? But by the time I crested the hill and spotted the sea glinting in the distance, all was forgiven. We were bound for The Rodley Pines, a cosy little pine lodge tucked away in a peaceful holiday park just a stone's throw from the North Yorkshire coast. It was our first family getaway in ages – me, the missus, and our two lads, aged 10 and 12, buzzing with that pre-holiday energy that usually means half-eaten crisps in the glovebox.

Pulling into the park around 3pm on a drizzly Friday, the place had that perfect seaside welcome vibe. The Rodley Pines sat there like a welcoming hug in wood cladding, all double-glazed windows and a cheeky veranda overlooking a communal green space where kids were already kicking a football about. We parked up on the gravel pitch – crunch, crunch – and unloaded the boot in a whirlwind of suitcases, wellies, and a rogue bag of Percy Pigs that had burst open somewhere en route. "Dad, is this our castle?" my youngest piped up, eyes wide at the lodge's pitched roof and the promise of bunks inside. I chuckled, thinking, yeah, mate, compared to our terraced house back home, it might as well be.

Stepping through the door was pure magic – or at least, the kind of magic that comes after a three-hour drive with backseat squabbles. The open-plan living area hit you first: a squishy L-shaped sofa in front of a smart TV, already tuned to CBeebies (lifesaver), and a wood-burning stove begging for a cheeky fire later, even if it was still technically summer. The kitchen was compact but brilliant – granite worktops, a full-size oven, and a fridge that hummed contentedly, stocked by us with local treats from the Co-op en route: Yorkshire forced rhubarb yogurt and a slab of proper cheddar. I could smell the sea air mingling with the faint pine scent of the place, and it felt instantly like home, but better – no lawn to mow.

First impressions? Spot on for lodge life chaos in the best way. The lads bolted straight for their twin room at the back, complete with those fun cabin bunks that creak just enough to make climbing them an adventure. "It's like a treehouse!" the eldest yelled, while I wrestled with the wonky blind in our en-suite double. Laugh out loud moment: trying to make a cuppa, I knocked over the sugar bowl, sending granules flying like confetti. The missus caught it on video, naturally. "Welcome to paradise," she grinned. We spilled out onto the veranda with mugs in hand, watching the sun peek through the clouds over the park's play area – swings, slides, and a mini climbing wall that had our boys plotting world domination before tea.

That first evening, we wandered just five minutes down to Peasholm Park, the air thick with chippy smells and candy floss. Ducks quacked for crumbs by the lake, and the lads chased each other round the bandstand while we munched fish suppers from a nearby van – proper battered haddock, golden and flaky, with mushy peas on the side. Back at the lodge, chaos reigned as we attempted a board game (Monopoly, naturally – ended in tears and laughter), the stove crackling away with logs from the park's honesty box. Sat there in the glow, I had a quiet moment of reflection: life's mad rush back home fades fast in a place like this. No emails pinging, just simple stuff – salty air, full bellies, family giggles. The Rodley Pines wasn't flash, but it nailed that relaxed Scarborough vibe: unpretentious, comfy, and utterly restorative.

By bedtime, with the lads zonked out and the sea murmuring faintly through the open window, I knew we'd nailed the first day. Three days of this? Bring it on.
