About The Maple.

Cloughton is a village in Yorkshire, just north of Scarborough on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. With several pubs and small shops, it has all the essentials. Ideal for walking, cycling and horse riding, especially along the 'Cinder Track', a disused railway path. Scarborough, with its seaside attractions and restaurants, is just 15 minutes away by car.

  • Whitby Abbey

Perched on Whitby’s East Cliff overlooking the North Sea, the Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey stand where a monastery was founded in 657, becoming a key Anglo-Saxon religious centre. Climb the 199 steps from town to reach it.

About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from York, nursing a lukewarm cuppa from a service station that tasted like regret. It was meant to be a straightforward hour-and-a-bit jaunt down the A64, but no, your correspondent here decided to take a "scenic" detour through some winding B-roads near Pickering, convinced it'd shave off time. Spoiler: it didn't. Instead, I ended up in a queue of caravans crawling along like they were auditioning for a snail documentary, and to top it off, my sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly just as I hit the outskirts of Scarborough. "Recalculating," it chirped cheerfully, while I muttered expletives that would make my nan blush. By the time I spotted the seafront's twinkling lights piercing the early evening gloom, I was knackered, parched, and questioning my life choices. But then, there it was—The Maple, tucked away in a quiet spot off the main drag, waving me in like an old mate.

Pulling up outside this gorgeous little chocolate-box cottage, I had one of those "worth every second of that bloody traffic" moments. The exterior is all honeyed stone and ivy-clinging charm, with a proper Yorkshire welcome in the shape of a flower-filled window box that screamed "cosy night in ahead." I fumbled with the key safe—classic me, entering the code wrong twice because my fingers were numb from gripping the wheel like a stress ball—and tumbled inside, bags banging against the doorframe like an enthusiastic drunk. Mishap number two: I'd packed so much "just in case" gear (wellies, thermals, enough teabags to sink a ship) that one bag split open in the porch, spilling socks across the welcome mat. Laughable, really. I stood there amid the chaos, chuckling to myself, thinking, "Smooth operator, aren't you?"

Stepping into the lounge proper was like sinking into a hug from a favourite auntie. Low-beamed ceiling, a crackling wood burner already set with kindling (bless the hosts), and those squashy sofas begging you to flop down with a GandT. The decor's spot-on—think Farrow and Ball neutrals, tasteful seashore prints, and a telly bigger than my flat's kitchen. Kitchen? A dream. Sleek granite worktops, a range cooker that could feed a regiment, and a fridge stocked with local milk and butter. I cracked open a bottle of prosecco I'd smuggled in (priorities), poured a glass, and wandered through to the bedrooms upstairs. Ours was the master, with a king-sized bed piled high with feather pillows and a view straight out to the glittery North Sea. The en-suite? Marble-tiled luxury, power shower hissing invitingly. I caught my reflection in the mirror—windswept hair, rosy cheeks from the chill—and had a proper moment of self-reflection. Here I was, mid-forties, still getting lost on road trips like a daft teenager, yet somehow landing in this slice of seaside heaven. Life's too short for perfect plans; sometimes the detours drop you right where you need to be.

First impressions? The Maple's a belter—feels like home but posher, with every thoughtful touch screaming "relax, you've earned this." I stepped out onto the tiny patio as dusk settled, Scarborough's promenade lights flickering to life below, the distant crash of waves on South Sands mingling with seagull chatter. No Olive Oil Valley nonsense here; it's pure North Yorkshire bliss, five minutes' stroll from the beach, chip shops, and that bracing sea air that clears the soul. Popped down to Luigi's for haddock and chips—crisp batter, fluffy insides, mushy peas on point—and wandered back, munching under streetlamps, the earlier chaos forgotten. That first evening, feet up by the fire, I toasted to mishaps and maple magic. If arrival's this good, three days here might just ruin me for anywhere else.
