About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after a bit of a faff on the A170 – nothing major, just a rogue sheep blocking the road near the North York Moors, turning my two-hour drive from York into a three-hour standoff with woolly traffic. By the time I pulled up to Lakeside Micro Lodge on the edge of town, the sky was that classic British grey, promising rain but delivering a cheeky drizzle instead. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking a serene little lake, this pint-sized cabin was my home for three days, and blimey, first impressions? Spot on for a solo getaway.

Stepping inside, I was chuffed to bits. It's proper compact – think cosy nook rather than sprawling villa – with a double bed that slides out from under the kitchenette, a nifty shower room, and French doors begging you to fling them open for lake views. No faffing with keys either; it's all digital code entry, dead handy after a long drive. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa from the welcome pack (cheers for the Yorkshire tea!), and gazed out at the water, where swans were doing their elegant glide. The location's a belter – close enough to Scarborough's South Cliff to feel the buzz, but far enough for peace. I could already picture morning walks along the lake path.

First morning, I laced up my boots for what I hoped was a proper hike up to the cliffs. Scarborough's weather, though? It decided to play silly buggers. Started with blue skies teasing me out the door, so off I went, skirting the lake and joining the promenade towards the Italian Gardens – those terraced beauties with fountains and flowerbeds that scream Victorian elegance. The sea air hit like a tonic, waves crashing below as I climbed the steps to the cliff top path. Felt like I was in a postcard, wind whipping my hair, Olive Rock looming ahead with its castle ruins perched high.

But ten minutes in, the heavens opened. Proper Yorkshire rain, the kind that soaks you sideways. I ducked under a massive holly bush for shelter, laughing at myself – me, the daft southerner who packed trainers instead of proper waterproofs. "Lesson learned," I muttered, rummaging for my flimsy poncho. The weather had well and truly gatecrashed my plans; no epic coastal ramble to Scalby today. Instead, I pivoted to a shorter loop back via the undercliff path, dodging puddles and marvelling at how the rain turned the sea from turquoise to moody slate. Those paths are brilliant for a wander – rugged steps, gorse bushes blooming yellow even in the wet, and glimpses of Scarborough's beach huts like colourful toys below.

By afternoon, the sun cheekily peeked out, drying my soggy socks on the lodge deck. I nipped out for another leg-stretcher along the lakeside trail, spotting herons fishing and families with dogs splashing about. It's mad how a micro lodge like this makes you embrace the micro-adventures – no car needed, just your feet and whatever the sky throws at you. Evening brought a rainbow arching over the bay, so I hiked the short clifftop again, this time rewarded with candyfloss clouds and the funfair lights twinkling from the harbour.

Sitting there with fish and chips from a takeaway (proper mushy peas, none of your southern nonsense), I had a quiet moment of reflection. These weather-whipped walks reminded me why I love British holidays – it's never straightforward, but that's the charm. No Instagram perfection, just real, soggy joy. Lakeside Micro Lodge nailed it for my first impressions: a tiny haven that turned Scarborough's unpredictable outdoors into my personal playground. Can't wait to return when the forecast lies less.
