About Scarborough
I finally made it to Scarborough after a bit of a faff on the train from York—nothing major, just spilled my cuppa all over me lap right as we pulled into the station, turning me into a walking advert for Yorkshire Tea. Laughing it off, I grabbed a taxi and headed straight for Kelly's Retreat, this cosy little cottage tucked away in a quiet corner near the South Cliff area. From the moment I turned the key, it felt like stepping into someone's quirky grandma's hug—compact, characterful, and just right for a solo three-day unwind.

First impressions? Blimey, what a gem. The place is proper Scarborough: stone walls, a teeny garden with sea glimpses peeking over the hedge, and that faint salty tang in the air. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and the sound of gulls and distant waves hit me like a welcome committee. No grand foyer or fancy lobby here; it's all homely vibes, with a retro kettle and a shelf of dog-eared books about local shipwrecks. I brewed up (carefully this time) and plonked on the sofa, already plotting how to lose myself in this town's hidden corners rather than ticking off the tourist traps.

Right, off I went, map app ditched in favour of proper wandering. Scarborough's got that magic where you turn a corner and stumble on pure gold, especially if you're not chasing the Valley or the Castle. Wandering down towards the South Sands, I accidentally veered off the main path onto a narrow lane that spat me out at this secluded pebble beach I'd never heard of—must be one of those forgotten coves below the cliffs. No crowds, just me, a few hardy dog-walkers, and the sea chucking pebbles like it was in a mood. I sat there for ages, skimmin' stones and pondering how daft I'd been lately, always rushing about back home. That gentle lap of waves? Proper therapy, innit? Made me reflect that sometimes getting lost is the best way to find yourself—no itinerary required.

Buoyed up, I looped back inland, following a whim past allotments and up a weedy bridleway that looked like it led nowhere. Turned out it deposited me at the edge of Oliver's Mount, but not the racetrack bit everyone knows—instead, this wild, overgrown heath with views over hidden rooftops and the bay twinklin' below. I picnicked on a soggy bench (thanks, typical Scarborough drizzle), chucklin' to meself about how I'd planned a posh lunch but ended up with a Greggs pasty from a side-street bakery. Proper local, that—greasy, glorious, and gone in three bites.

Evening drew in, and I pushed my luck with another daft detour near the Spa area, slippin' down a back alley off the Esplanade. Hidden gem alert: a tiny, graffitied sea arch overlookin' a rockpool paradise, where kids were pokin' about for crabs and an old fella was fishin' with a bit of string. No signs, no coach parties—just raw, rugged coast. I watched the sun dip, paintin' the water gold, and felt that rare buzz of accidental discovery. Back at Kelly's, I rustled up fish and chips from a hole-in-the-wall chippy I'd spotted en route (cod was flakin' perfection), scoffin' 'em in the garden as the town lights flickered on.

That first day set the tone: Scarborough's real charm ain't the postcards, it's these off-piste pockets you find by gettin' gloriously lost. Kelly's Retreat was the perfect base—close enough to stumble home knackered, but far enough from the fray to feel like a secret. Can't wait to "lose" meself again tomorrow.
