About Scarborough
The taxi dropped me right outside the lodge on the edge of town, and blimey, first impressions didn't disappoint. Tucked away in a quiet residential pocket, it's one of those dog-friendly stone cottages that screams North Yorkshire charm without trying too hard. I let myself in with the key safe code, and there it was: a snug haven with low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire (even if it was July), and walls lined with bookshelves that whispered "put your feet up, mate." The open-plan living area flowed into a compact kitchen, all done up in soft neutrals with quirky seaside prints – perfect for a solo wanderer like me. I dumped my bag and headed straight for the private patio garden, a sun-trapped gem with pots of lavender buzzing with bees and a couple of weathered benches. Plonking myself down with a cuppa from the welcome tray (proper Yorkshire tea bags, thank goodness), I just sat there, watching the world slow down. Scarborough's gentle hum was in the background – seagulls squawking, distant waves from the South Bay crashing – but here, it felt miles away. No itinerary, no apps pinging; just me, a dog-eared copy of a local history book from the shelf, and the kind of peace you forget exists. That first afternoon melted into pure indolence. I pottered about the garden, deadheading a few roses like I was some countryside gent, then sprawled on the cushy sofa with a flask of tea and a bag of Percy Pigs. The lodge's vibe is all about unwinding – those deep armchairs practically hug you, and the big windows frame views of leafy back lanes without a hint of traffic. I nipped out for a gentle amble to the nearby Peasholm Park, barely a ten-minute wander, where the boating lake sparkled under the sun. Rented a pedal boat for half an hour? Nah, too energetic. Instead, I perched on a bench, feet dangling, watching families paddle about while I munched a Flake from the ice cream van. Back at the lodge by teatime, I rustled up beans on toast, cracked open a bottle of Malbec, and let the evening fade with Radio 4 on low. Day two kicked off even lazier: breakfast in the garden with birdsong as my alarm, then a slow read of the Scarborough Mercury someone had left behind. Stories of crab pots and beach donkeys had me chuckling – proper local flavour. Venturing no further than the Northstead Manor Gardens, I meandered through the tropical plants and fairy-lit paths, grabbing a coffee from the Olive Tree café. It's that easy rhythm I loved: no rush to the castle or the spa, just soaking in the sea air, feeling the town's pulse without joining the race. Back at Kaitkyella, I lit that stove anyway (pure indulgence), curled up with a blanket, and lost hours to a podcast about Yorkshire folklore. Hilarious how a squirrel outside the window became my evening entertainment – dashed in, nicked a nut, scarpered like a furry burglar. Reflecting on it now, as I lounged on that final morning with toast crumbs on my lap and the garden alive with butterflies, I realised how knackered I'd been without knowing it. Work's endless treadmill had me wired; this lodge was my reset button. No epic adventures, no Instagram poses – just the sheer bliss of bugger all, in a place that wraps you up like a favourite jumper. Kaitkyella Lodge? Spot on for slowing right down. If you're after that, book it – you won't regret spilling your latte to get there. |
