About Scarborough
I finally made it to Cayton Pines after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from Leeds. Picture this: me, the missus, and our two lads crammed into the Volvo, bags piled high like we'd packed for the apocalypse. We'd set off bright and early, full of beans about our three-day Scarborough jaunt, but about halfway there, disaster struck in the form of a rogue crisp packet. Yeah, you read that right. Our youngest, Finn, five going on feral, decided to lob a half-eaten cheese and onion monster under the passenger seat. By the time we hit the A170, the car reeked like a dodgy kebab van. "Mum, it smells like feet!" wailed our eldest, Jack, plugging his nose dramatically. We pulled over near Pickering for an emergency crisp forensics mission—me on my hands and knees, swearing under my breath while the family howled with laughter. Classic family holiday start, innit?

An hour later, we trundled into Cayton Bay, that lush little pocket just a couple of miles south of Scarborough town centre. The pines loomed welcomingly as we turned off the main road onto the site's winding lanes, the sea breeze already whipping through the open windows, chasing out the crisp fug. Cayton Pines is one of those proper gems—cosy lodges dotted among the trees, hot tubs bubbling away like they were waiting just for us. Ours was a cracking two-bed number, all wood-panelled charm with a wee deck overlooking the woods. First impressions? Blimey, it was like stepping into a posh garden shed that someone had magicked a kitchen and telly into. The lads bolted straight for the PlayStation we'd snuck in, while I flopped onto the squishy sofa, inhaling that fresh piney air mixed with a hint of sea salt. "This is the life," I sighed, already forgetting the drive.

We'd barely unpacked when the lodge life chaos kicked in—proper relaxed family break vibes, mind. Jack discovered the hot tub on the deck and demanded an immediate dip, despite it being a brisk Yorkshire October afternoon. "It's spa time, Dad!" he yelled, stripping off like a loon. The wife and I exchanged glances—should we? Why not? We cranked up the bubbles, chucked in a cheeky bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the nippers), and piled in. The water was scorching, steaming up the pines like a foggy morning in the Dales. Finn splashed about, turning it into a pirate ship battle, drenching us all. I emerged looking like a drowned badger, towel-turbaned and grinning like an idiot. "Best decision ever," I declared, as we huddled inside for fish fingers and beans—lodge gourmet, sorted.

Wandering out for first impressions of the surroundings was pure joy. The site's right by Cayton Bay beach, a stone's throw from the lodge. We ambled down the path through the dunes, sand shifting underfoot, the North Sea crashing away like it was putting on a show. No crowds, just us and a few dog-walkers. The boys skimmed stones (badly—mine went backwards half the time), while we munched ice creams from the nearby parlour. Scarborough's promenade felt close enough to pop over for chips later, but honestly, who needed it? This was simple pleasures central: the rustle of pines, the cry of gulls, that endless horizon. Back at the lodge, we fired up the barbecue (gas, thank God—no faffing with charcoal), grilling bangers and marveling at the sunset painting the bay orange. A bit of lodge chaos ensued when Finn knocked over the ketchup—red streaks everywhere, cue more hysterics—but it was brilliant.

Sitting there that first evening, pint in hand, watching the lads conk out on the sofa mid-film, I had a proper moment. Life's mad rush—work, school runs, the daily grind—feels miles away here. Cayton Pines isn't flashy; it's just right for recharging with your lot, embracing the little mishaps and muddy wellies. First impressions? Hooked already. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
