About Shropshire
Stepping inside after that three-day jaunt last weekend, I was hit with that instant cosiness only a proper English country bolthole can deliver—wood-burner crackling (I’d texted ahead to get it going), telly humming softly, and a welcome pack of local Hobnobs and Shropshire cheese that had me grinning like a kid. First impressions? Spot on. The place sleeps six but I was solo, so I had the run of the beamed living room and that cracking kitchen with its Aga humming away. Outside, the garden sloped down to the water, with benches begging for a cuppa. Perfect for a walking holiday, I thought, lacing up my boots before I’d even unpacked. Day one dawned misty but promising, so I struck out for the Long Mynd, just a couple of miles up the lane—proper Shropshire walking country, all purple heather and wild ponies. The path from the cottage wound through meadows dotted with sheep, the air thick with that earthy dampness you only get here. I was buzzing, map in hand (OS Explorer 217, naturally), aiming for the top of Pole Bank at 1,700 feet. But British weather, eh? By noon, the clouds had bellied up like overfed sheep, and the heavens tipped it down. Proper stair rods. I hunkered under a gorse bush, laughing at myself—me, the intrepid hiker, reduced to a drowned rat with a soggy pork pie for lunch. Plan A (epic views over Carding Mill Valley) scuppered, I squelched back to Withy Willows, where the wood-burner became my best mate. Stripping off layers and brewing a builder’s tea, I reflected on how daft it is sometimes, us lot charging into the hills like we own the weather. A quiet moment by the window, watching rain dance on the brook, reminded me why I love these escapes: not the conquering, but the surrendering. Next morning, brighter skies lured me out again, this time for a gentler tramp along the Wenlock Edge, a mere stone’s throw away—limestone escarpments with buzzards wheeling overhead. The paths were slick from yesterday’s deluge, mind, turning every step into a comedy of slips. I nearly went arse-over-tit on a muddy incline near the Edge’s famous biker’s route, chuckling all the way down (safely, I might add). Sun broke through, spotlighting foxgloves and those mad ancient woods, but by afternoon, fog rolled in like a sheepdog herding us mortals home. Back at the cottage, I adapted sharpish—porch for reading the paper, kitchen for a fry-up with local eggs from the honesty box down the road. Weather had flipped the script again, forcing me off the high paths onto brookside wanders right from the garden gate. Blissful, really—ducks quacking, willows whispering, no rush. Third day, I gambled on a loop via Stokesay Castle, that fairy-tale timbered gem half a mile off. Started drizzly, so I hugged the low lanes, splashing through puddles past half-timbered farms. By castle walls, sun pierced the gloom—magic hour for photos of its black-and-white towers against the hills. But true to form, gales whipped up as I looped back, bending the willows like they were doing the twist. Laughing through chattering teeth, I dashed home to Withy’s sanctuary, kettle on, feet up. Those weather whims turned what could’ve been a bog-standard hike fest into a proper adventure—plans dashed, new paths found. First impressions sealed: Withy Willows isn’t just a stay; it’s a base for Shropshire’s moody magic. I’ll be back, come rain or shine. |
