About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Willow Lodge VIP Hot Tub and Pet Friendly near Bridgnorth in Shropshire – a proper comedy of errors to kick off my three-day getaway. I’d packed the car with my daft spaniel, Rufus, who’d already devoured half a pack of digestives before we even hit the M54. Then, about ten miles from the Shropshire border, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Bumper-deep in mud after five minutes, I’m there swearing at the satnav while Rufus barks like a loon. A local farmer in a battered Land Rover tows me out with a grin and a “You townies, eh? Follow the sheep next time!” Saved by a sheepdog and a bit of Shropshire goodwill – classic start.

Pulling up to Willow Lodge just as the sun dipped behind the Teme Valley hills, I was knackered but buzzing. It’s this cosy, pet-friendly gem tucked in a quiet spot a stone’s throw from Bridgnorth’s high street – think exposed beams, plush sofas, and that VIP hot tub bubbling away like it’s waiting for a party. First impressions? Spot on. The place screamed “relax” from the off, with its private garden perfect for Rufus to chase his tail and a welcome hamper of local cheeses and cider that had me grinning before I’d even unpacked. But honestly, it was the locals who turned arrival into an absolute highlight, turning what could’ve been a quiet check-in into a proper chinwag fest.

No sooner had I lugged the bags in than old Bert from next door pops over the fence. He’s this wiry chap in wellies, probably mid-70s, with a face like a wrinkled map of the Severn Valley. “New ’ere, are ya? Mind the hot tub – last lot had a rabbit party in it!” he cackles, handing me a pint of his home-brewed scrumpy from a shed that looked older than the lodge itself. We got chatting about Bridgnorth’s quirky cliff railway – the steepest in Britain, he boasts, steeper than his ex-wife’s temper. Bert’s tales of smuggling cider across the river during floods had me in stitches; apparently, the Teme’s a sneaky bugger when it rises, turning gardens into lakes. Rufus took to him instantly, rolling belly-up for scratches while Bert muttered, “Good dog, better than my ex’s Pekinese – that thing bit the postman’s arse clean off!”

Then there’s Maureen, the village postie who delivered my forgotten milk the next morning (I’d left it in the car fridge, doh). She’s a force of nature, zipping up on her bike with a basket full of gossip. “Heard you got stuck in ol’ Farmer Jenkins’ field! He’s still laughing down the pub.” Over a cuppa on the lodge patio – that hot tub steaming invitingly behind us – she regales me with stories of Bridgnorth’s haunted inns and the time the local Morris dancers scared off a burglar with their bells and hankies. “Shropshire folk, we’re odd but loyal,” she winks. “Stay clear of the hermit up Quatt way, mind – reckons he’s kin to the Severn bore.” Her laugh’s infectious, and before I know it, she’s scribbling down her scone recipe on the back of a leaflet for the local steam railway.

Wandering down to the high street for a pint at the nearby Lion Inn, I bump into cheeky Tommo, the barman with tattoos older than his Ford Fiesta. “Hot tub holiday, eh? Don’t let Bert near it – he’ll turn it into a brewery!” He pulls me a perfect pint of Shropshire Lad and spins yarns about the valley’s hidden grottos and the eccentric Lord who once raced ducks down the river. Everyone knows everyone; by closing time, half the pub’s waving me off like I’m family.

Sat there that first evening, hot tub jets massaging the drive’s kinks away, Rufus snoring beside me, I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of London life, I’d forgotten how these quirky characters – Bert’s scrumpy wisdom, Maureen’s gossip glow, Tommo’s pint-pulling patter – make a place feel like home. Shropshire’s magic isn’t just the lodge’s luxury; it’s the folk who welcome you with open arms and a daft story. Can’t wait for day two.
