About Shropshire
First impressions? Spot on. The owners had left fresh milk, biscuits, and a Shropshire guidebook on the kitchen table – thoughtful touch. The lodge is compact but brilliant: beams overhead, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and French doors opening straight onto a fenced garden perfect for Rufus to chase his tail. I dumped my bags, clipped on his lead, and we were out the door for our inaugural walk before the light faded. Shropshire's got these cracking paths right on your doorstep, and Sycamore Lodge is no exception – you're surrounded by rolling hills and woodlands that scream "get your boots on." Day one kicked off with a gentle stroll along the nearby Severn Valley trails. The weather was playing nice at first: crisp autumn sun filtering through the golden leaves, Rufus bounding ahead like he'd never seen a stick before. We ambled past the River Severn, its waters glinting, and I couldn't help chuckling at how Rufus tried to "swim" in a puddle that was barely ankle-deep. Proper daft dog. The air was fresh, laced with that earthy Shropshire scent of damp soil and pine, and for a moment, I felt that rare buzz of being utterly content – no emails, no deadlines, just me, my mutt, and the great outdoors. But oh, British weather – never one to let you get too comfy. By evening, as we looped back towards the lodge, the sky turned moody. A fine drizzle started, then proper rain, turning the paths into a muddy slip 'n' slide. I slipped once, landing on my bum with a squelch that had Rufus tilting his head in sympathy. Laughing it off, we dashed inside, where I fired up the stove and towelled him down. First lesson of the trip: always pack the waterproofs, even for a "quick five minutes." Come morning two, I was itching for more. Checked the forecast – patches of blue, but warnings of showers. Undeterred, we headed out for a longer hike up to the wooded slopes behind Bridgnorth, maybe two miles from the lodge. The initial climb was lush: bracken crunching underfoot, views opening up over the Severn Valley with its patchwork fields and distant church spires. Rufus was in heaven, sniffing every fox trail. But halfway up, the heavens opened again – not a downpour, but that persistent mizzle that soaks you to the bone. Plans to push on to the high point? Scrubbed. Instead, we sheltered under a massive oak, sharing a soggy biscuit (his) and pretending we were explorers weathering a storm. It forced a bit of reflection, actually – sat there, rain pattering on the leaves, I realised how often I bulldoze through life without pausing. Shropshire's weather has a way of making you slow down, appreciate the now. By afternoon, it cleared just enough for a cheeky loop around the local meadows – vibrant with blackberries we scoffed straight off the bush (Rufus got a few too, the greedy git). Back at the lodge, dripping but chuffed, the hot tub was a godsend. Steaming away while Rufus snoozed, I watched the clouds scud over the hills. Day three dawned brighter, but the weather's whims had already shaped the stay: shorter hikes, more lingering in the garden, impromptu tea breaks under the lodge's overhang. Sycamore Lodge Pet nailed it for this – close to trails that flex with the forecasts, cosy enough to retreat when the rain wins. If you're after a pet-friendly Shropshire escape where walks and weather dictate the adventure, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back. |
