About Shropshire
Pulling up to Snowdrop Treehouse, I was smitten straight away. Tucked into a peaceful garden spot on the edge of Ellesmere, it's this gorgeous wooden lodge perched just off the ground, all warm cedar tones and twinkly fairy lights that make it look like something out of a storybook. No grand entrance, just a little deck with a hammock swaying gently and views across to the shimmering water of the mere—Shropshire's very own slice of lakeland magic, right on the doorstep. The host handed over the keys with a welcoming mug of hot chocolate (proper British hospitality), and as I stepped inside, the world slowed to a delicious crawl. First impressions? Cosy doesn't even cover it. The open-plan space is a hug in cabin form: a squishy sofa piled with blankets, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy fire, and a kitchenette stocked with tea towels and local marmalade. Up the ladder to the loft bed felt like climbing into a nest, with skylights perfect for stargazing without budging. I dumped my bags, kicked off my muddy wellies, and flopped onto the sofa with my book—some light-hearted detective novel I'd been saving. The joy of doing bugger all hit me like a warm wave. No emails pinging, no rush-hour traffic, just the tick of a clock and birdsong filtering through the trees. That first afternoon, I pottered about the garden like a contented mole. It's a proper haven—wildflower patches buzzing with bees, a couple of bird feeders dangling from branches, and those panoramic views over Ellesmere Mere that make you forget time exists. I strung up in the hammock with a cuppa, watching mallards paddle about and the odd narrowboat chug past on the water. Light humour in the form of me attempting to read while a cheeky robin dive-bombed the feeders, scattering seeds everywhere. "Oi, mate," I muttered, "this is my downtime!" But honestly, it was brilliant—pure, unadulterated sloth. Wandering down to the mere's edge for a gentle explore was the extent of my "adventure." It's barely a ten-minute stroll, past cosy boathouses and reed beds, with the water lapping softly and herons standing sentinel like grumpy uncles. I found a bench, cracked open my crisps, and just sat. No itinerary, no photos for the 'gram—just breathing in the fresh Shropshire air, laced with that earthy, peaty scent. The sun set in a blaze of pinks and golds, turning the mere into a mirror of fire, and I ambled back as dusk fell, firing up the stove for my first night. Lying there that evening, flames crackling and a glass of local cider in hand (picked up from a farm shop en route), I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection. Life back home is a whirlwind—deadlines, doom-scrolling, the lot. Here, in this treehouse bubble, doing so very little felt like the point. It's not about ticking off sights; it's the luxury of slowing down, letting the quiet refill your cup. Three days stretched ahead like a promise of more of the same, and I couldn't have been happier. Snowdrop Treehouse? Absolute perfection for anyone craving a proper pause. |
