About Shropshire
Pulling into the drive, the first impression hit like a warm hug. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the Ellesmere roads – close enough to pop to the shops for milk but far enough to feel like our own little world – Primrose Treehouse isn’t your bog-standard holiday let. It’s this whimsical wooden perch, elevated among the trees, with fairy lights twinkling along the deck even in daylight. The host, a lovely local chap named Tom, greeted us with a wave and a thermos of tea, apologising for the “Shropshire welcome” as if the mud was his fault. We clambered up the steps – kids first, naturally, whooping like Tarzan – and stepped into a space that screamed lodge life bliss. Compact but clever, with a double bed tucked under the eaves, bunks for the little ones, and a lounge area that somehow fit us all without elbows in faces. That first evening set the tone for our three-day jaunt: pure, unhurried relaxation laced with the gentle chaos of family. We dumped the bags and fired up the barbecue on the private deck – nothing gourmet, just sausages from the Ellesmere butcher we’d spotted en route, sizzling away as the sun dipped behind the woods. The view? Glorious. Overlooking the garden and glimpses of the mere, that glassy lake just a short stroll away, where swans glided like they owned the place. The kids darted about, pretending the treehouse was a pirate ship, while I sipped a beer and watched the light fade. Simple pleasures, innit? No screens, no schedules – just the crackle of the barbie and birdsong. Inside, it was all homely charm. The kitchenette had everything for a fry-up: kettle on for builder’s tea, toaster for crumpets, and a mini-oven that turned out a cracking shepherd’s pie from leftovers. We sprawled on the sofa, playing Uno by lamplight, with the odd “Oi, no cheating!” echoing out. First impressions-wise, the quirky touches won us over – the skylight perfect for stargazing (we spotted a few through the clouds), the woodburner begging for a lazy evening fire, and those hammocks swinging gently outside, calling for afternoon reads. Sure, there was a spot of chaos: the youngest tipped a full mug of squash over the rug (“Classic!” I laughed, mopping up), and the bunks creaked like an old ship, but that’s the joy of treehouse life. It’s not polished perfection; it’s lived-in magic. As I lay there that first night, listening to the family’s snores and the rustle of leaves, I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of daily grind back home, we forget these pockets of peace – how a daft mishap and a treehouse perch can reset the soul. Shropshire’s got it in spades: the meres, the lanes, the unpretentious vibe. Primrose nailed that relaxed family break, turning arrival jitters into instant belonging. By morning, we were hooked, ready for lazy walks around the mere and more lodge shenanigans. Best decision ever. |
