About Shropshire
I finally made it to Olive Lodge VIP after a bit of a faff on the drive down from the Midlands. Picture this: I'm humming along the A442 towards Bridgnorth, windows down, dreaming of a proper Shropshire escape, when—splat!—a rogue pigeon decides my windscreen needs redecorating. Not just a speck, mind you, a full-on Jackson Pollock job. I pull over near Much Wenlock for a hasty wipe with a service station napkin, muttering about my rubbish luck, but honestly, it set the tone for a cracking three-day jaunt at this cracking little lodge. By the time I trundled up the lane to Olive Lodge, just a stone's throw from Bridgnorth, I was starving and ready to tuck in.

First impressions? Blimey, what a gem. Tucked away in that lush Shropshire countryside, it's a posh shepherd's hut vibe—cosy, modern, with all the bells and whistles like a cracking hot tub (which I eyed greedily for later). But let's be real, the star of the show was the kitchen setup. Fully kitted out with a smashing oven, hob, and even a fancy air fryer, it screamed "get cooking, lad." I'd packed a cool bag stuffed with goodies from the weekly market in Bridgnorth—mere minutes away by car—grabbing fresh Shropshire butter, local cheeses that could make you weep, and a punnet of plump strawberries that tasted like summer in a bowl.

No sooner had I dumped my bags than I was cracking on with lunch. Fancying something simple, I rustled up a ploughman's from the market haul: crusty bread from the bakery stall (their sourdough is legendary, all chewy and tangy), a slab of mature cheddar from Wenlock Edge Dairy, and some pickled onions that packed a proper punch. Sat at the lodge's outdoor table, pint of local ale from the fridge (they stock a few cheeky ones), I scoffed the lot while watching the sheep amble by. Proper idyllic, that. The hut's vibe made it feel like my own private gastropub—wood-fired pizza oven begging to be fired up, herbs growing right outside the door.

Afternoon called for a wander to The Crown in nearby Highley—under five miles, easy peasy—where I propped up the bar for a cheeky half of Three Tuns, Bridgnorth's own brew, golden and bitter just right. Landlord recommended their pie of the day: steak and ale, flaky pastry collapsing into gravy heaven. I demolished it with mushy peas and chips, chatting with locals about the best spots for more grub. "Olive Lodge?" one bloke said, "You're sorted—pop to the farmers' market tomorrow for bacon that'll change your life." Laughing, I headed back, full as a goog, plotting my evening feast.

Dinner was my big cooking attempt, and crikey, it nearly went tits up. Inspired by the market's fresh trout from the River Severn (Bridgnorth's famed for its angling), I tried pan-frying it with lemon and those garden herbs. But I got cocky with the hob—smoke alarm went mental, filling the hut with a faint whiff of charred fish. Salvaged it just in time with a dollop of that Shropshire butter, served with new potatoes and a watercress salad from the greengrocer stall. Washed down with a bottle of local cider, it tasted alright in the end—rustic triumph. Sat there in the lodge's glow, hot tub bubbling away unused (saving that for tomorrow), I had a proper moment of reflection. Amid the food frenzy, I realised how rare it is to slow down, chop onions without rushing, savour every bite. Shropshire does that to you—turns a daft holiday into something nourishing, body and soul.

Next morning, straight back to Bridgnorth market for breakfast sarnies—bacon baps from the butcher's van, smoky and dripping. Pub lunch at The Old Lion beckoned, their Sunday roast looming large in my mind already. Olive Lodge VIP? First impressions sealed it: a foodie's dream bolthole, where every meal feels like a local secret unlocked. Can't wait to return and nail that trout second time round.
