About Shropshire
Pulling up to Mallard VIP, though, all that chaos melted away faster than ice cream on a Wenlock Edge summer day. Tucked away in this peaceful spot just outside Craven Arms, it's one of those luxury shepherd's huts that Shropshire does so brilliantly – think posh glamping without the midges. The place is a stunner: a sleek, wooden hut perched on a raised deck, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the rolling Shropshire hills. I hopped out, still mopping up tea with an old tea towel, and the host – lovely chap called Mike – was there in seconds with a welcoming wave and a "No worries, love, happens to the best of us." He handed over the keys with a quick rundown: underfloor heating (bliss), a wood-burning stove ready to go, and a hot tub bubbling away like it was born to soothe arrival dramas. Stepping inside was pure magic. The space is compact but clever – a king-sized bed piled high with fluffy duvets that screamed "sink in and forget the world," and a kitchenette kitted out with everything from a Nespresso machine to posh olive oil for a spontaneous fry-up. I dumped my bags and immediately fired up the kettle for a proper cuppa (no more thermos disasters), gazing out at the view. Those hills? They're the real deal, all lush green and dotted with ancient oaks, with the odd buzzard soaring overhead. It's proper Shropshire postcard stuff, but right there from your own private deck. I cracked open a cheeky bottle of local Ludlow Brewery ale I'd picked up en route – their Best Bitter hits the spot after a drive – and just sat there, feet up, letting the first impressions sink in. The hot tub called next, and oh boy, did it deliver. Slipping in with a sigh, the jets pounding away the drive's tension, I watched the sun dip behind the Long Mynd in the distance. No light pollution, just stars starting to wink on – magic. But here's the light-hearted cock-up: I got so relaxed I nodded off for a solid 20 minutes, waking up prune-fingered and giggling at myself. "Smooth, mate," I muttered, towelling off in the cute en-suite shower with its rainhead that felt like a spa day. As the evening drew in, I rustled up some pasta with that fancy oil, lit the stove (crackling away like a pro), and sprawled on the sofa with a book. That arrival mayhem? Already a distant memory. Staying at Mallard VIP hit me with this gentle nudge of self-reflection: life's little hiccups, like sheep standoffs and spilled tea, are what make the good bits shine brighter. In Shropshire's quiet embrace, with this hut as my cosy bolthole, I felt properly recharged. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Can't wait for day two. |
