About Shropshire
I finally made it to Lodge 3 Vip Pets near Oswestry after a bit of a faff on the journey from the Midlands. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A5 in my trusty old estate car, windows down, radio blaring some cracking Radio 2 tunes, when—bam!—a rogue pheasant decides to play chicken with my windscreen. No harm done, just a feathery fright and a quick stop to check for feathers (none, thank goodness), but it had me chuckling at how even the birds in Shropshire are up for a laugh. Arriving at the lodge just before teatime on a drizzly Friday, I was knackered but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation.

Pulling up to this cracking little pet-friendly haven, tucked away in a peaceful rural spot on the edge of Oswestry, I was smitten straight away. It's one of those proper cosy lodges—think wooden cladding, a pitched roof, and a welcoming porch piled with logs for the wood burner. The owners had left a cheeky note saying "Make yourselves at home, and let the dogs run riot in the garden!"—spot on, as my two mutts, Bertie and Maud, were already sniffing out paradise. The garden's a belter: enclosed, wildish round the edges with Shropshire's rolling hills peeking over the hedges, and a couple of bird feeders dangling from the apple tree. Perfect for pottering about with a cuppa, watching the robins squabble.

Stepping inside, it was like the universe had read my mind about needing to do bugger all for three days. The open-plan living space is compact but dead cosy—plump sofas begging to be sunk into, a telly for the odd footie match, and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a slow cooker to posh tea towels. I dumped my bags, cracked open a bottle of local Shropshire cider (nabbed from a farm shop five minutes down the lane), and flopped onto the sofa with a dog on each knee. First impressions? Blissful laziness incarnate. No itinerary, no alarms—just the joy of faffing.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. Rain pattered on the windows as I rustled up beans on toast (gourmet holiday fare), then curled up with a battered copy of Bill Bryson I'd brought along. The wood burner flickered away, casting a warm glow, and Bertie snored like a chainsaw. I had a proper moment of self-reflection there, staring into the flames: life's mad rush back home—deadlines, emails, the lot—felt a million miles away. Why do we bother with all that when slowing down like this feels so ruddy good? It's the simple stuff that recharges you, innit?

Saturday dawned misty and mild, ideal for embracing the lodge's lazy vibe. After a lie-in till half nine (luxury!), I ambled out to the garden with coffee in hand. The dogs chased shadows while I lounged on the bench, flipping through pages and letting my mind wander. Mid-morning, fancying a gentle mooch, I drove just a couple of miles to Oswestry's high street—nothing strenuous, just a potter past the butchers for some pork pies and a browse in the independent bookshop. Back at the lodge by lunch, I devoured my spoils on the patio, feet up, watching clouds scoot over the nearby hills. Afternoon? More reading, a siesta on the sofa, and a spot of dog-walking round the immediate fields—lush green pastures dotted with sheep, the air thick with that earthy Shropshire scent. No hikes, no selfies, just breathing it all in slow.

By Sunday, I was so in the zone of doing sweet FA that even packing felt like a chore. First impressions of Lodge 3 Vip Pets? It's the ultimate antidote to burnout—a snug bolthole where time stretches out, the garden whispers "stay put," and the only agenda is unwinding. If you're after Shropshire serenity without the schlep, this is your spot. I drove off with a full heart, lighter than when I arrived, already plotting a return for more of that glorious nothing.
