About Shropshire
Pulling up to Kings Lodge around teatime on that drizzly Friday, I was knackered but instantly charmed. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Ellesmere, it’s one of those cosy lodges that screams “get away from it all” without being pretentious. Picture a smart wooden cabin with a pitched roof, flower baskets dangling by the door, and a gravel drive that crunched under our tyres like welcoming applause. We’d booked it for the hot tub and the peace – Shropshire’s got that unspoiled vibe, doesn’t it? – and from the off, it delivered. The kids, aged 8 and 10, tumbled out first, whooping at the sight of the private garden and that gleaming hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting for VIPs. Stepping inside was like hugging an old mate. The open-plan living area hit you with warmth from the wood-burning stove (we got it going later, faffing about with kindling like amateurs), plush sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that had everything – from a massive fridge for our picnic spoils to a Nespresso machine that saved my caffeine-deprived soul. “Mum, look at the bunk beds!” yelled the youngest, racing upstairs to claim the top bunk in their cosy room. Ours was a treat too – king-sized bed with fluffy pillows, and those big windows framing views of the garden and distant fields. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like home, but better – no chores, just us lot unwinding. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz I’d stashed in the cool bag (bubbly’s non-negotiable for arrivals, right?). Sat out on the decking as the sun dipped low, watching the kids chase each other around the lawn, their laughter echoing off the hedges. That’s when I had a proper moment of self-reflection, sipping my drink and thinking, “Blimey, when did life get so hectic? Work emails piling up, school runs on repeat – this is what we needed.” No grand plans, just being together, away from the screens. The lodge’s little chaos kicked in straight away when the eldest tried “supervising” the hot tub temperature and nearly scalded his toes – “It’s like a witch’s cauldron!” he yelped, hopping about. We all pissed ourselves laughing, then piled in properly once it was sorted, bubbles fizzing around us under the starry Shropshire sky. Pure bliss. Saturday morning dawned misty, and after brekkie of eggs fried in the well-stocked kitchen (proper British fry-up with local sausages from the nearby farm shop we’d spotted on arrival), we wandered the 10-minute stroll to Ellesmere’s mere. It’s a stunner – this glassy lake right on the doorstep, swans gliding about like they own the place. Hired a couple of pedalos for an hour, the kids pedalling like maniacs while we trailed behind, waving at dog-walkers on the towpath. Back at the lodge by lunch, we lounged in the garden, playing Uno on the picnic table amid minor squabbles over who cheated (me, probably). That afternoon, a gentle potter to the high street – nipped into the butcher’s for steaks and the bakery for fresh scones, chatting with locals who reckoned Shropshire’s the best-kept secret in England. Couldn’t argue. Evening brought more lodge life magic: barbie on the go, flames flickering as we grilled those steaks, rain spitting just enough to make us dash inside giggling. Cosied up by the fire with board games, the kids conking out early in their bunks. First impressions of Kings Lodge? It’s the antidote to everyday madness – simple joys like that hot tub soak, family giggles over burnt marshmallows, and zero pressure. Shropshire’s gentle chaos wrapped us up perfectly, reminding me family breaks like this recharge the batteries like nothing else. Can’t wait to go back. |
