About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Ivy Lodge VIP near Bridgnorth – a proper Shropshire jaunt that started with me spilling my flask of tea all over the passenger seat just past Telford. Sod’s law, innit? There I was, faffing with the satnav, convinced I’d taken a wrong turn onto some B-road, when really it was just my clumsiness turning the car into a soggy teabag. Still, by the time I trundled up that winding lane to the lodge, the sun was peeking through, and my first glimpse of the place had me grinning like a Cheshire cat.

Nestled in the hills just outside Bridgnorth, Ivy Lodge VIP is one of those cracking little VIP cottages that feels like a secret hideaway. Picture a cosy stone-built gem with a hot tub bubbling away on the private patio, fairy lights twinkling in the eaves, and views stretching over rolling Shropshire countryside. I pulled up mid-afternoon on day one, dumped my bags, and cracked open the French doors to that massive garden. The air was crisp, laced with that earthy scent of damp grass and wildflowers – pure Shropshire magic. First impressions? Bloody luxurious. The open-plan living space screamed indulgence: squishy leather sofas, a telly bigger than my flat’s kitchen, and a kitchenette stocked with posh teas and biscuits. I felt like I’d stumbled into a celeb’s bolthole, not some bog-standard holiday let.

But this trip was all about walking, getting my boots muddy in proper British weather roulette. Day one kicked off promisingly – blue skies, not a cloud in sight. I laced up and headed straight out for the Bridgnorth Cliff Walks, a gentle riverside ramble along the Severn that’s right on the lodge’s doorstep. It’s only a couple of miles, but blimey, the views! You’re dodging hanging baskets and peering over cliffs at the old town’s wonky black-and-white houses clinging to the hillside. I chuckled to myself spotting a cheeky squirrel nicking nuts from a feeder – proper wildlife encounter without the effort. The path winds past the Hermitage, that tiny cave chapel carved into the rock, and I paused for a brew from my (spare) flask, feeling dead chuffed with life. Ivy Lodge felt like the perfect base, just a hop back for a feet-up.

Come evening, I planned a longer hike up to the Jubilee Woods for tomorrow, dreaming of panoramic vistas. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a sense of humour all its own. Day two dawned with a cheeky drizzle, turning my grand ambitions into a comedy of soggy socks. I set off anyway, stubborn as a mule, aiming for the North Gate trails from Bridgnorth Castle Hill. Barely a mile in, the heavens opened proper – fat raindrops pelting like they had a grudge. I sheltered under a massive oak, hood up, laughing at how my “weatherproof” jacket was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Plans shifted sharpish: instead of summiting, I looped back via the calmer Castle Walks, splashing through puddles and waving at dog-walkers who looked equally drenched. Back at the lodge by lunch, I cranked the hot tub toasty, stripped off the wet layers, and soaked while the rain hammered the pergola roof. First impressions evolved – this place wasn’t just pretty; it was a weather warrior’s haven, with underfloor heating and fluffy towels saving the day.

That gentle self-reflection hit me in the tub, bubbles fizzing around me. Here I was, mid-forties, chasing hikes like I was twenty again, only to be humbled by a bit of Shropshire mizzle. It reminded me why I love these getaways: not the grand adventures, but the daft adaptability, the joy in a spontaneous hot tub dip when the clouds win. Day three teased more weather whims – a misty morning stroll along the Severn Valley paths near the lodge, where the fog rolled in like cotton wool, muting the world to whispers. No epic peaks, just peaceful plodding past grazing sheep and the odd heron flapping off. By tea-time, sun broke through again, gilding the lodge’s garden in gold. Ivy Lodge VIP? Spot-on first impressions – a walker’s dream bolthole, rain or shine, mishaps and all. Can’t wait to go back.
