About Shropshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Callow Lodge 22 in Shropshire – a proper British road trip comedy of errors. I’d set off from Shrewsbury early on a drizzly Friday morning, sat-nav purring away, dreaming of cosy cottage vibes. But ten minutes in, I managed to splatter my windscreen with a rogue dollop of mud from a passing tractor. Visibility? Zero. Cue panicked wiper action and a hasty pull-over on a narrow lane near Attingham Park, laughing at myself while scrubbing it off with a soggy tissue. Classic me – turning a 20-minute jaunt into an unintended car spa session.

By the time I rolled up to the lodge, the clouds were parting like they’d heard about my arrival. Nestled in a quiet spot just outside Shrewsbury, this attractive Shropshire cottage is the picture of rustic charm: low-beamed ceilings, a cracking log burner, and French doors opening onto a private patio that screams “put your feet up”. First impressions? Spot on. The owners had left fresh milk, biscuits, and a cheeky note welcoming me to their “little slice of Shropshire heaven”. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out to breathe in that fresh countryside air – all rolling fields and distant hills, with the River Severn not far off.

Keen to shake off the drive, I laced up my boots for an explore. Shropshire’s a walker’s paradise, and Callow Lodge is brilliantly placed for it. First up: a gentle two-mile loop around the nearby Attingham Park estate, just a short stroll away. The weather was playing nice – crisp autumn sun filtering through golden leaves, perfect for ambling along the deer park trails. I spotted a few fallow deer grazing, felt like I’d stumbled into a BBC nature doc. Light-hearted skip in my step, snapping pics on my phone, thinking, “This is why I love these getaways – no agenda, just me and the paths.”

But oh, British weather, you capricious beast. By midday, the sky turned moody, and a proper downpour hit as I looped back towards the lodge. Plans for a longer hike along the Severn Valley Walk? Scuppered. I dashed inside, dripping like a drowned rat, collapsing into an armchair with a grin. First impressions of the cottage ramped up here – it’s a hug of a place when the elements turn. I stoked the fire, cracked open a book, and watched the rain lash the windows. Cosy doesn’t even cover it; it’s that deep, soul-settling warmth that makes you realise how knackered you’ve been.

Saturday dawned misty, teasing me with half-promises of blue skies. Undeterred, I headed out for a proper Shropshire stomp: the Quarry Walk in Shrewsbury town centre, about three miles from the lodge. It’s a belter – winding paths through the historic quarries, past the Sabrina Bridge, with views over the looping Severn. The mist clung low, turning everything ethereal, like hiking through a Brontë novel. Gentle humour in the air as I dodged puddles the size of small lakes, nearly slipping arse-over-tit on a slick stone. “Stay upright, you daft sod,” I muttered, chuckling.

Then the weather flipped again – wind whipping up, spitting rain that turned my jacket into a sodden sponge. Back at the lodge by noon, I peeled off layers, reflecting quietly over a steaming mug of tea. These moments hit you, don’t they? Sat there, rain drumming on the roof, I pondered how Shropshire’s mercurial skies mirror life’s unpredictability. You plan your epic hikes, but sometimes the best adventures are the soggy scrambles home, fire crackling, feeling utterly content. No grand epiphanies, just a gentle nudge: slow down, adapt, enjoy the bloody weather for what it is.

Sunday’s farewell hike was a short one – a sunny jaunt along the riverbank paths near the lodge, weather holding just long enough for a victory lap. Callow Lodge 22? First impressions sealed it as my new Shropshire fave. Muddy mishaps, weather whims, and all – it’s the perfect base for walking whatever the skies throw at you. I’m already plotting a return.
